Dear Bakshish,

A start up should  be willing to pay for any value add that will help them optimise resources...namely time, operational cost, material and labour.

The service provider should be able to quantify the value delivered by his/her service.

For example: Customization of applications like jhoomla that run on mysql require  time and  skilled  manpower that a startup may not have. If this could be outsourced to a vendor who will adhere to timely completion , then  the current resources of the starup could be directed to core areas. The same holds true for the customization SugarCRM

Well, we do MySQL all the time. Social Apps are the most database
hungry types. If you have the skills in performance boosting,
optimizations then a lot of people who would be willing to pay for it.
I would definately !

Let me know for the kind of work that you have done.. i would be happy
to be your first client :-)

Hi,

It depends... many startups use mysql as tool, however at very early stage,[most of them] they would not bother about it, as their hosting provider taking care.

The main problem is not scalability, the problem is to reach to have situation which requires scalability ... :)

However few observation about few web startups !
-Many web startups/founders/developers/designers/whole team are geek in web dev, but many of them never compiled mysql or apache on their own. [Or even never downloaded source code]
-They are excellent in DB-design, basic admin, development, Sql querying,Usage of phpMyAdmin etc. so  If they develop website, which gain traction...After they are literally dancing for Performance and scalability. At this point Enterprise service for Mysql is very much useful.[As at this point they may have already some fund also !]

Please note this is my personal thoughts, i am very much new into Web Development,...

In fact I know of a Bangalore based startup which had to get hard core MySQL guys in US to redo their entire DB design, production deployment architecture, capacity planning and performance testing. For most of the consumer focussed websites that are being built, designing a really good database is of prime importance. It would suck big time if u were to redesign it after running in production for months. Twitter has had its fair share of failures when it failed to scale, database too being one of the primary reasons. Given that most of the websites being designed of late mostly use the LAMP stack, it makes sense to engage those vendors early on in the
product lifecycle.
