Hey everyone,

As you may have noticed we've had a bit of trouble snagging a decent
venue for barcamp so far, we've hit up various schools, large
conference spaces and more, all of which are completely booked for
quite sometime, or just wanted to charge too much money, money we
didnt have. Some recent examples from the past month being ucla and
ucla anderson, and the pacific design center.

Do you have an awesome venue recommendation? Perhaps work somewhere
that might be open to it, maybe even own a space that can handle the
next barcamp? We're all ears, and definitely want to make this happen
asap. Send us your thoughts and suggestions here or offlist at
he...@barcampla.com

Also, if you have ideas on other ways you'd like to help us organize
or put together this or future barcamps, send us an email, we'd love
to chat.

Thanks!

-Chris

Hi Chris,

UCLA is an awesome venue, but it definitely requires planning far in advance, since it gets booked a few months ahead of time.

Other possibilities that I've seen recently:

- Air Conditioned Supper Club (in venice)
- ISI offices in Marina Del Rey
- Santa Monica public Library

Kathie:

A main gathering area to hold roughly 200+ people, and 4-5 breakaway
rooms for sessions that can ideally hold 20-30 people or so.
parking and a little extra space for storage of things, food/snack
prep etc is a bonus.

Amanda: im not familiar with coloft, what is it? (msg me offlist if needed.)

Hey Everyone,

Just figured I'd chime in. I still have all the gnarly wifi hardware
that Aruba and Xirrus has given me. If you guys need a droid to do the
wifi/networking/etc I can just bring up barcampSD's hardware. It's been
working like a champ since its instantiation.

Heres the writeup I did for this most recent barcampSD's network

Chris,

I am not sure if this would really be of interest but figured it may
be something the group to comment on....since I don't think any of the
coworking spaces would be of particular fit but would provide the
right atmosphere.

Since there are about 4 'official' coworking spaces here in LA now
maybe it would be interesting to try out a BARCAMP LA.

4. Then a new one on Pico/ Western .. I think...

Another possibility is the CrashSpace run by Sean Bonner et al.  http://blog.crashspace.org/

I love Crashspace, but it is probably not big enough for Barcamp.

Not to speak for anyone else @ CrashSpace, but as a member I am pretty
sure that CS would not be a good fit for the sheer size of attendance
of BarcampLA (guessing at least 150-300 attendees). I think CS would
max out at about 40-50 people at one time, in a comfortable learning
environment. Sean may think otherwise, and I would not want to speak
for him or any others that are part of CrashSpace.

Yeah, Eric having invited me there for the opening meeting, there's *NOOO*
way the Crashspace in Venice would work for a BCLA...sorry, there's just no
way (even though it'd be a very cool space for it)! :P

As everyone else has said Crash Space is not the right place for Bar Camp, which is why I didn't volunteer it.

What about a K-12 school? They would seem ideally suited for the
breakout and social spaces. LAUSD is probably not feasible, but a
smaller district or private/parochially school might be amenable.

Might hash the drinking/smoking vibe ...

Just be aware that you will likely need to pull permits and have a million dollar or so insurance policy and give them a rider proving coverage for this event. There may also be a fee. In 1997 I paid out $200 for an LAMG meeting in Culver City after presenting the paperwork.

Don't know what type of budget but Skirball Cultural Center would be
ideal http://www.skirball.org/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=59
big, centrally located - at least for westsiders :) big rooms and
small breakout rooms and very pro for groups, events without going the
"uninspiring" convention center route.

Random thought: How about an airport hanger? I have no idea about
availability, cost, or suitability, but with all the airports I drive
past the thought wormed its way into my head. And if larger airports
like LAX or even Long Beach aren't suitable, how about smaller ones
like Hawthorne?

Sounds like a great idea. However, the kind of security clearance that
could be required might be a major hurdle. Definitely worth a try
though.

Skirball would be great as well.

Random thought based on NPR report this morning...

apparently lots of old courthouses are closing.  Perhaps barcamp could happen in one of those.  No idea how to make that happen... but might be interesting.

Santa Monica Airport rents out one of their hangers all the time, FYI.

My notes from looking at it for the MacGathering™ in Oct 2003. Maybe things have changed though. Maybe it has been built out or may you no longer need to bring your own generator. If the parking is still there the location was nice.

The Barker Hanger
Linda Sullivan - (310) 390-9071
35,000 sq feet 150 x 234'
They rent the air and the floor and we bring in the rest. Bring your own generator for electricity.
There is only 1 area that is separate but not accessible to handicapped people.
3 parking lots.
$5500.00 for an event day + $2,000 for setup day. If you do 2 event days it goes down to $4500 per event day.

Some thoughts on this matter:

- CalTech
- Downtown Artwalk spaces / art gallery space
- Empty office space (I think Justin was looking into this) 1 day
rentals, etc. (I supposed you'd need electricity)
- Nike Missile Base: course, you'd have to hike to it and bring all
your own electricity/wireless/etc and you might get arrested, but it
would be a unique venue
- Book a block of hotel rooms ~150 each - get them all together/a
suite and get ~6/7/8 rooms/spaces for sessions and breakouts for
~$1000.
- Local community centers. I know of two in mid-city that might work
out with enough pre-planning.

How is the next Barcamp orging going? Will there be any open planning meetings?
