Google and BarCamp - I dont know whether to laugh or to cry

Dear Friends,

Yesterday I got a very funny call from Google. I had created an advertisement for the event BarCamp Kerala 10 using google adwords and was waiting for approval. This lady calls me up and apologized saying that they cannot approve the ad saying that they have a policy against ads related to liquor. I tried talking some sense into her explaining the about the event asking her to 'google' about it etc. But she refused, she demanded that the only way to get the ad running is to change the name and the url. Can you believe this, a company as reputed as google making such stupid stand on an event which is conducted all over the world.

when i tell people about the BarCamp ,some...from Kerala do think of the Advocates's BarCamp... some may even think of the "BAR" for liquor....but never said to me...:)

thats a stunning news...a company like google responds like this..unbelievable!!

what i believe is you got such a response only because the girl called you is uneducated about what happening around geek world...it is difficult to educate such people. If you followup the communication with them better try to contact some senior persons there.

this is the same issue I concerned if we recruit freshers as BDO, they may answer or question stupidly, the topic we discussed sometimes back :)

Cool.  Now, I see an opportunity here.

Use this to turn the table around and get eyeballs for Kerala Barcamp. "Google bans BarCamp Ad mistaking it for an Alcoholic product" will get a lot of attention.

But to have people believe this (they would anyway if it comes from a reliable source, but just as an additional backup), we need to show the official emails/conversations. If you can pull it off (may be email them once again and they'll repeat the same thing.), nothing like it.

As they say, everything happens for a reason ;)
