Ok, I eventually got hold of the Sci-Bono COO again. And, the venue is confirmed and booked for the 25/26th August for BarCamp :-)
Is the date ok? Or should we make it the 26/27. I get the idea it's easier for them to do a Friday/Saturday, than a Sat/Sun.

There's one snag, the cost. It's quite expensive as it's such a great venue. They're charging us a full....

R400 :-)

We just need to send through another email stating is non-profit etc etc and what BarCamp is about as they're quite interested in the idea and then it's all set.

That's why i'd like to have to venue confirmed, will give us a date and place to work with. The tentative dates is the barcamp earth dates. I'm on my way to work now, will give them a call as soon as i get there.

Maybe I'm being selfish but set dates will help me plan a bit better and I
always work better when working to a deadline, besides I'm keen to approach
some corporate sponsors and it helps to have consensus.

Let me know what y'all think?

not a final date but there were suggestions of something near the end
of Aug (although i won't be here for the last weekend of aug).

do you think we should confirm a date before we go public? or do you
think we put it out there and ask people to give input?

yeah i agree. If possible I'll move it tomorrow morning when i send through the non-profit stuff . Are you guys happy with the venue though? I just blundered forth and booked a venue...

I went there for the BMW 1 launch about two years ago and then it looked pretty cool, big warehouse with industrial machines etc but haven't been there since.

Otherwise sounds peachy!

Off topic but...

I only know two guys that went to that BMW 1 launch.

Both drive BMW 1s

Must have been a good launch.

On the barcamp thing, do we have a basic agenda (basic, promise)? Guys i've chatted to re Cape Town said that it was extremely technical and very high level. It seems that we've chosen a date that's very close without firming up what's going to be happening.

"I'm sensing a meeting in the flesh might be a good plan…" - Yep, me too. Preferable as soon as possible, maybe tomorrow or Wednesday afternoon 18h00ish? Where would be central for everyone?

The venue (Science Museum) is confirmed but the dates might be an issue with Scott not being here the last week of August. We need to finalize this pretty soon though. I've asked for the dates to be moved to the BarCampEarth Saturday/Sunday (26/27) but if it's an issue we might want to look at early September. I don't want to mess the venue around too much as they've been very co-operative and also very lenient with the rates so far. R400 instead of R8k/d. But if we need to move it we need to move it :-)

I don't think we should be overly concerned with the agenda, if we start with the three suggested main themes - "
tech,
culture and new media " and work from there we should be able to flesh it out pretty quickly. Especially the tech one, depending on the background of the people attending a good starting point might be the Recommended Sessions ( http://barcamp.org/RecommendedSessions ). Once people starting putting their names down it'll also be easier to gauge what would be appropriate topics to suggest and hopefully people will start listing topics that would be of interest to them.

We've got separate break-out rooms at the venue so maybe we can think about splitting the event into the different themes (or high-level and very tech), but that's also something we can leave for a 2.0 decision.

Cheers,

Armand

Rich! I'm with you – this needs to be pretty accessible at all levels.

Have we chosen a date?  Is it all confirmed?

I'd be happy to take responsibility for sourcing, asking and co-ordinating speakers for the event, obviously with input from the community on what and who they want to hear.  I'm sensing a meeting in the flesh might be a good plan…

Sandton would also be convenient for me. Scott can chip in here but he might not be available this evening?
But if he can make it this evening shall we meet somewhere on the square?
