Hello barcamp fox valley folks!

My name is Jason Gullickson and I'm working with a group in Beaver Dam to start a Makerspace. We thought holding a barcamp at the space would be a great way to raise awareness of the project locally as well as draw in regional makers, hackers and other creative and innovative types.

Remembering a conversation I had with Pete about doing a fox valley barcamp, I thought this might be a great opportunity it collaborate.

We are currently looking at a one day camp happening either mid-February or March, held in the space which will be the future home of the Makerspace. It is at the moment a gigantic basement of a factory that is being developed into business/office space and condos. A sort of blank canvas if you will.

I'm currently working on answering some facilities questions (insurance, Internet, food) but I'm looking to you guys for attendee/presenters, getting the word out and any assistance you can provide on making the most out of the facilities we have.

I'm going to meet with the group here in beaver dam again this week to see if we can nail down the date and answer some of my facilities questions. After that I'll check back in and update you all.

I have to admit I was a little disappointed about the location of
Beaver Dam for BarCampFoxValley. It's only about 15 minutes closer
than Milwaukee for me (I'm in Green Bay).

BUT it's probably the best location to start out. We'll be able to
draw on the Madison/Milwaukee communities to generate interest in
BarCampFoxValley and your makerspace.

How confident are you that your space will be a viable venue? Do you
have a solid date yet?

We haven't decided a specific date yet but we are looking at either mid-feb or sometime in March. I have agreement from the beaver dam folks on 02/18 but from some of the posts on the DHMN group it was unclear if this was a good date for some of the DHMN folks that would like to be involved. Of course no date is perfect, and I'd like to pin this down before too long but since I selected that date rather arbitrarily I thought I'd give everyone a little time to mull it over an determine if another day was superior.

Sorry to cross-post this but I wasn't sure if everyone involved in the discussion was moved over to this thread:

After several conversations and considerations it looks like our best bet is a mid-March date, so I'm suggesting March 24th.

If there's no objections by the end of this week I'll consider this satisfactory and move on to the next steps, thanks!

Two updates:

First off, looks like the date will need to get pushed out a little more, so we're looking at Saturday, March 31 (I am still committed to locking this in by the end of the week, so I promise it won't change again after Saturday :)

Secondly, it's not going to be called "Barcamp Fox Valley" (primarily because Beaver Dam isn't technically in the Fox Valley). Instead, we'll be calling the event "DamCamp" (as suggested by Tim) and further updates will be posted at http://www.beaverdammakerspace.org.
