Hey all
I just attended BarCampMilwaukee4 (
http://barcampmilwaukee.com) this
past weekend (the 1st weekend of October, and my 1st BC so far), and
would like to shoot some ideas to y'all about what I saw/experienced
there. (I'm from Lewisville/Irving, and am temporarily out of the
state.)
Food.
For day 1 lunch, participants were asked to bring in ingredients or a
complete dish for a potluck, to help keep event costs down. We were
given a "Mexican" theme, but nonetheless, foods did not stay resricted
to just Mexican. Just a listing of what I remember seeing were chips/
salsa, fresh fruits, taco fixings, home-baked cakes with the BarCamp
logo & also the BarCampMKE4 design ( and 1 cake was even vegan),
candy, dried fruits, soda, water, tortillas, a bean/corn dish,
cookies, and much more. For day 1 dinner: pizza from Streetza, a local
Milwaukee mobile pizza kitchen (
http://streetza.com), was served
courtesy of one of the sponsors. And of course, there was still a lot
of foodstuffs and snacks left over from lunch. Then, for day 2
breakfast: a couple of the main players volunteered to griddle up some
pancakes, eggs and sausage links for everyone. Frozen berries, cool
whip, and syrup were available as pancake toppings. There was milk and
breakfast pastries as well. Lunch day 2, croisanwiches & wraps &
single-serving bags of chips were brought in from a catering company
courtesy of another one of the sponsors. Also, participants were asked
to bring their own plate/bowl/cup/utensils, and the means to wash them
were available in the building. Some did, but also a few participants
opted to buy disposable plates & utensils for everyone to use.
T-shirts.
One of the main players recruited people for a sort of design contest
(
http://gabewollenburg.com/node/288) for the shirt design, and there
were a couple designs that ended up being voted on. Then, the final
product was a mashup of the 2 designs. They only ordered a limited
number of shirts in various sizes, so the first 200 folks to register
for the event received a t-shirt. I am really pleased with the design
& color that was chosen.
Nametags.
We just used plain white label stickers & wrote our names on them with
sharpies. Worked well enough.
Location.
Typically, the Milwaukee BarCamp would be held at Bucketworks (http://
bucketworks.org), but not this year as their building became flooded &
they are looking for new space. Luckily, there was some unused office
space at the Chase Commerce Center (on Milwaukee's south side), and
the landlord offered use of the space for BarCampMKE at an extremely
good rate.
Sponsors.
Several local technology-related firms, as well as others. A list is
located on the BCMKE4 website. As well, a donation page is available
on the website, and pledges/donations were taken from participants
during the unconference for next year's BCMKE. Over $3,000 was pledged/
raised so far.
I really enjoyed attending BCMKE4, and can't wait to attend another,
in Milwaukee or elsewhere. If I think of anything else to add/point
out on how things were done at BCMKE4, I'll post again. Also, feel
free to ask me any questions on anything else that I may have observed
or experienced there, in regards to planning the next BarCamp Dallas
