Members,

In my 4 years of experience, I have worked for 2.5 years in a product
development company and for 1.5 years in a consulting company. Somehow, I
have come to realize that I just do not enjoy being in a consulting/services company. The
difference is clear: while in product dev, each day would be thrilling. The
ride to the office would be populated with thoughts of
"Today, am gonna achieve this!!! Am gonna achieve that!!"

In the consulting job, I find myself dragging myself to the office. My first project in the services company was horrid; it turned out to be a death march, that went from late nights once in a week to late nights every day and on Sat/Sun too!! It burned me out entirely. I am now in another project but I just don't feel like working there anymore.
To top it all, there's not much work that is interesting anyway. Also, nowadays I find my brain giving me thoughts of it getting rusted.

So here it is: I am looking around for a job change, but only to product
dev. Being in Chennai, I am currently looking around for product development
cos in Chennai. Am not against moving to B'lore, but since I am already in a big city, I guess I can look around for opportunities here first.

So here's my question: Are there any product development cos. in Chennai? Or
will I have to shift to B'lore?

Hi,
You should not blame all the consulting companies based on a single experience.  Yes, I know there are lot of companies in which almost all the projects are death march, but there are few exceptional companies in India.
I have experiences in both product & services companies. Product company can give oppurtunity to go to depth in an area. But if you want to be in cutting edge of technology only consulting companies can give that oppurtunity.

Now I'm with a consulting company which forces employees to work only for 8 hrs / day & giving enough work life balance.

I'm going to office with the same thrill you said for product company "Today, am gonna achieve this!!! Am gonna achieve that!!". + I can always try the latest.

Cheers,
Thiyagu
