All,

For some reason, my mind has recently been toying with the idea of using Linux. If not installing Linux, at least using a live CD of Linux and playing with it. I have worked with Linux before but not much, and hence I still consider myself a noob.

I checked out the various Linux distributions and I had a feeling that for a noob like me, Ubuntu would be fine. Initially, my plan is to tinker with Linux and then start coding on it. If the need arises, I might install it.

Some doubts here which I thought I'd put across to people on the forum:

1) Is it necessary to install Ubuntu in case I want to develop applications on Linux? I ask this because I don't have a computer of my own. I share it with my family members, who often get critical when I install some memory-hogging software.

2) My initial plan was to order a Live CD from the Ubuntu website. Browsing on the Net turned up a suggestion that some people do face customs problems when the CDs arrive at the border? Has anyone faced this? Is this a real problem? (I have visions of customs and police officers appearing at my doorstep!!!)

Forgive me if any of the questions sound stupid.

Hi, let me try to answer them
.

1. You dont have to install it on your
machine, you can install it on a VM, a virtual machine, ie a software
which virtualizes a physical machine. I recommend VirtualBox or VMWare
Server for virtualization software. I've written on some
virtualization basics on my blog, http://sathyasays.com/ just search
for virtualization.
2. I believe all of those are fake, I've ordered
couple of times, never have Ifaced any custom problems, neither have
many of my friends who've ordered them. So relax and go ahead :). Do
get back if you have any more queries.
