Hi,

Adrian, we have been recieving a bit of interest from potential
sponsors, and where are waiting for "the word" on a venue from a UCT
contact. As always its easy to get peoples interest peaked, but tough
to get a real response. I have 3 other people looking out for
opportunities: Dave, Max and Rob from Quirk.

So far we are moving for the 15th of June for a date.

We have around 35 people signed up on the list so far with a few other
interested parties that haven't.

Lots of stuff is needed still, looking for sponsors or contacts to
organise some chow and drinks, else desperately in need for a
bandwidth solution, anyone got any iBurst or Sentech that they can
offer (we can negotiate something).

Will start a second phase of rallying soon. As always, please help out
if you can.

perhaps 3G (w/hdspa?). What are the prices on that per gig ? I really
don't foresee us needing
more than 2gb.

If it actually works as advertised, it might be the fastest, easiest
and simplest to set up.
Likely to have the best coverage too.

Other people might know better than me though.

There are 35 people subscribed to this mailing list. Working on the assumption that these 35 people are going to be the only conference attendees, 2GB would mean a bandwidth allowance of 58MB per person, which is hardly a resonable estimate.

What do you think is a reasonable estimate?

Consider that the bandwidth is intended for browsing, and
communication, NOT heavy downloading. That we are restricted by how
fast we can actually
download, and the ability to saturate the line, the fact that people
still need to sleep (watching people pass out at these things is
always great fun).

With a reasonable estimate we can begin to approach people for funding.

I wish I was going to BarCamp amsterdam in may =\

100MB per person sounds reasonable to me.

Maybe look at it the other way and say we could saturate a 128kb line for 3 days solid.

128kb a second = 16 kilobytes a second
960 kilobytes a minute
57600 kilobytes an hour = 56.25Mb an hour
56.25 x 72 = 4050Mb
4050/1024 = 3.99 gigs

Its all about control, if you tie down internet access, block everything other than http and ftp then it should be easy to not use too much bandwidth. If people come expecting to have free internet access, download isos and the latest Harry Potter movie then its a problem.

128kb is very very conservative, thats just and ISDN line.

Cheers

I was thinking have a hotspot like signup, and a permanent display on
a projector of bandwidth usage per person.

so we can shame people into not abusing our bandwidth =)

Hey,

Drop me a line with an updated wishlist if you like, sending out a
newsletter next week, maybe someone on our list can help. Otherwise
you're welcome to post it at www.liquidfridge.co.za/forum

Thanks Hein, will do.

On the bandwidth issue, I am also thinking along the lines that
Laurence has suggested. Thats why I think Sentech can offer a good
solution as it will be cheapest and very portable.

If we used 4Gigs on a 3g/HSDPA connection you will look at between 50c
to R 2 per meg. A little pricey...

My main reason for opposing them however, is that at least in
Johannesburg
their coverage map was fairly erratic, and it took far too long and
far too much
effort to get the right amount of signal for it to be useable (if it
even is useable when
it is working).

I would hate us to have wireless coverage be a requirement for a
venue. Which
is where I think that vodacom wins hands down.

I hear you,

Wireless signal is always an issue, hopefully the venue can provide something.

I use Vodacom 3G and I like it a lot, unfortunately cost is the
prohibiting factor. Just a little note on the 3G , my reception also
gets a little spotty from time to time, so I doubt there is any one
perfect solution.
