Hi guys,

After yet another lot of dead-end phone calls and emails for venues at
last there is one little glimmer of hope courtesy of Jan Groenewald
from AIMS down in Muizenberg.

This is what they can offer us,

One lecture room to seat 60 people in a classroom configuration, the
room has a projector, screen and a blackboard. One smaller room for
around 12 people with blackboard. One lab with projector and screen
(we can get guests accounts for those without notebooks at the event)
He is offering his bandwidth 256K international for us to max if we
want, I am hoping that we can up that but we will have to sort it out
with their provider.
They are nice enough to cater for us as well at very reasonable prices.

At the moment I wont have enough funds in the kitty to cover two days,
but I will go and chat to everyone that where interested in
sponsoring.

Limitations: We can't go through the night. 60 people max. no smoking.
no drinking.

I feel really comfortable with this venue, it suits our needs fairly
well and the infrastructure is all there.

Thoughts?

Those are some pretty hectic limitations there.

In fact, it's enough to not be able to call it a bar_camp_

And please don't think i'm harassing your work or anything.
Do we not know of any companies locally who would be interested in
sponsoring a venue?

A lot of the barcamps are just people camping out in the offices of some
company involved.

What are the costs involved re catering and overall for the two days?

yeah those limitations are a bit much, most geeks don't talk about much with out a few drinks.

how much mess would involved ? have we thought about just breaking into a ware house ? we use to do it a lot back in the 90's for far more devious reasons

Absolutely, we can do this I am just pointing out what the status is so far.

In terms of cost we are looking at around R4000 per day catering
included for around 60 people. Now if someone was to offer a space ...
there could be some money there hey??

Cheers

Can anyone think of any local companies with a big enough space for a
bunch of geeks?

Just a further FYI,

They have space for us at the parmalat enviro center down in soetwater
(kommetjie) and it would have been a jol if there was some sort of
internet connectivity, unfortunately there is like zero reception of
anything to be found down there.

Nice dorm-type accommodation with meals at like 250 - 300 per person
or R17000-00 for 60 ...

I tried a friend of mine at Novalis, but they're unfortunately not
taking more bookings this year. She did suggest a few other venues - no
contact details unfortunately. Not sure if you've already tried some of
these - I don't know anything about them myself, or how ideal they'd
be.
