Just a little update on the venue issue, we are still having some
issues in nailing down a venue as most are either unavailable or
fairly pricey.
At the moment our options are:
1) Hire a venue at UCT, there are available spots.
2) Jan Groenewald is going to sell is to AIMS in Muizenberg and see if
we can get in there, nice venue, limited to 70 people MAX. 3G is touch
and go.
3) Johann Botha may have an in at the Neelsie in Stellenbosch, tons of
bandwidth apparently, two large open spaces on the top floor. Capacity
for +- 100 people.
4) Presentation room at the Bandwidth Barn is a possibility (50 MAX people)
5) I have a list of 4 of 5 community halls to ring up next week. (no
infrastructure)
None of these venues will let us or have facilities to camp there
overnight, UCT and AIMS (maybe some of the others) will be no
drinking, can you guys deal with not camping at the venue?
Obviously I would LOVE to have us in a comfortable laid back
environment where we can roll out sleeping bags and listen to
presentations while gathered around a Keg ;) , but for now this seems
to be slipping away from us. Please rack your brains and let me know
of ANYTHING you can think of.
Privately owned properties are ideal, heck I would have you over to my
place if it was any bigger. Think offices (with boardrooms), empty
shopspace, warehouses, sports halls, barns, litteraly anything with a
roof and walls will do as long as we can fit around 100 people in and
it has power! We can even put up a marquee tent somewhere if you have
a big backyard!
Thanks guys, your input will be appreciated.

I have a contact person there, so if there's any interest let me know.

Hi All,
This doesn't sound like a bad idea. How would this affect people who
would normally be at the bowling club during BarCamp?
If the venue is a bit small, could we set up a gazebo or something
outside if there is enough space. Hmm, would our presence damage any of
the bowling grounds property? I would hate to piss off the management.
Do you have, or can you get photos of the venue?
Has anyone considered caravan parks/camping grounds. My limited
experience of these types of places leads me to think that some may have
some kind of events hall that we could use (or possibly a gazebo or
something could be set up).
Of course I could be talking out my rear.
Perhaps somebody who lives in Cape Town could look at the various parks
available. I'm sure it wouldn't hurt to try anyway.
An online search on google or wheretostay.co.za
(http://www.wheretostay.co.za/general/search-special.php) may yield some
results.
Kind regards,
Duncan

There's room to camp there, although people don't - we'd need permission
- and I 'll take pictures, there's a caravan park across the vlei too -
had a hall on it's grounds - this whole area's been a bit run down
these last years though, rapidly improving now though - I'll take pics
and post.

There is a nice camping spot in Tokai I believe, though I am not sure
if there is a hall.
Anyone got any inroads with the scouts? They got a spot in Sandvlei I believe.
Also we need to keep safety in mind guys, there will be lots of
expensive equipment around.
Yes, they do. I have contacts there. The base has garage sized
boat-sheds that have bunks in them. There is also a hall, a kitchen, an
area outside the kitchen, etc.
They will let the base to outside groups, but I don't know what the
pricing is. Should I put out feelers?

The base isn't perfect for that - things can get stolen. It is
reasonable out of the way, and probably safe, but I'd feel worried about
leaving expensive kit lying around. If I'm there, my laptop stays in my
car or on my back...

Its probably worth hearing what they say? Even if it is just for another option.
"It's called The Range. They're now running it as a coffee shop during
the day (until 5pm) so what they offer is now limited. I think it's
best to call them and ask. The Manager is Andrew. 713 2340."
