Okay...since this feels like it's becoming a tug of war:
We've been under the assumption from early on that any party we had would start later in the evening...when parties generally start. 8? 9? etc.
So, we probably should have made this assumption clear a couple of weeks ago by getting that schedule up, etc., but thought we were all on the same page.
Because we looked at the various other BarCamps and BarCamp experiences and decided that adding a DemoCamp element between BarCamp proper and Party Time would be a great way to offset the oodles of requests I'm getting for people to spam the BarCampers. No matter how many times I tell them:
"Barcamp is about relationships, collaboration and equality." They still hear TechCrunch's "1000 people are coming" and think: "How do we get all of those eyeballs?" So, in order to keep people from using sessions to sell, we thought we'd round them up nicely in a 2-hour DemoCamp. It's worked for many others and kept the balance. Plus, many people like demos.
THEN Ross went out and struck a deal with Blue Chalk that kinda threw a wrench into things. He went and booked an extremely early party that meant people had to go directly from BarCamp sessions to partying...which totally made us panic as we had been talking to heaps of people about DemoCamp.
So, we struck a solution on IRC last night. DemoCamp still happens from 5-7 and the party happens from 7-9, then continues to a lower key thing at SocialText until whenever.
BlueChalk will still have $5000 spent there (easy, as we are approaching 650 people...feeding them and giving them drinks will eat that up in under 2 hours - our 200 person party over a 4 hour period cost us $8000).
BlueChalk will be happy. Sponsors and eager Demo-ers will be happy. Most importantly, I will be happy because I can just keep directing those inquiries to the DemoCamp sign up on the wiki.
Can we agree on this?
