All,

Now that we are moving closer to BarCampBankSF2 and Finovate Startup
09, I'd like to revive the idea of organizing an informal social
gathering on Monday Apr 27 in the 6:00PM-ish. The idea would simply to
get together in a local bar and let anyone participating
BarCampBankSF2, Finovate Startup 09 or any financial innovator know
that a couple of us will be meeting there.

I've created an eventbrite event at http://post-bcbsf2-pre-finovate09-drink.eventbrite.com/
to start collecting interest.

I'll need help from the locals to select the best place. I've put a
couple of questions in the corresponding registration process so that
we get elements where this best place could be (close to Finovate
Startup 09, close to participants' hotels,..).

Please let me know what you think of the idea.

Cheers,

Frederic

I have no idea where the Finovate participants will be staying in San
Francisco but we certainly have no shortages of bars. I live in the
area where the meeting will take place and there are several local bars
but I think my first question would be (since I am too old to know what
is cool anymore) is what kind of bar are you looking for then we can
narrow it down.

Hi Diana,

Finovate has its conference at the Mission Bay Conference center. That
does not tell us necessarily where people will be staying and we don't
know yet if that is really an optimization criteria. I just throw the
place to get the ball rolling.

What is your area?

I don't think we're looking for a trendy bar, more something with
enough space to accommodate a bunch of financial innovators. I'd say
something very much like an English or Irish pub. But I'm very open to
new horizons.

Cheers,

Frederic

AFAIK there is no irish pub in that neighborhood. We'd have to go
closer to downtown. 21st amendment on 2nd near South Park would be a
good option.

In the neighborhood near Mission Bay Conference Center:
There are two places very close by, one is a café by day / club by
late night called Kelly's Mission Rock with an awesome deck and view
of the bay.
The other one is a salsa club (one of the best if not the best in SF)
called Cocomo's with a nice outside patio.
I would have to call both to see whether they can host us or not.

Kelly's Mission Rock seems close to the Conference center. But I'm not
sure many people will actually be staying in the vicinity of the
Mission Bay Conference Center.

Maybe looking within Soma makes also sense?

I ran a search in Google maps on "Irish Pub" - http://tinyurl.com/d52cnm
- and The Chieftain - http://www.thechieftain.com - came out (198 5th
St San Francisco, CA 94103). It seems to have a decent review. Anyone
knows the place?

Cheers,

Frederic

Frederic,

I'm never been to The Chieftain, but based on the location, I would
not recommend it.

Again, http://www.21st-amendment.com/ is a very clean micro-brewery
and techie-friendly place near South Park that I'd recommend strongly.

21st Amendment seems cool.

Just a question, is that permitted in SF to stand on the pavement with
a beer in your hand just like you do in Europe?

Guillaume, do you think you can give them a call just to check that
they don't have a big event on the 27 (on their site they speak of
Ecanomy Mondays - not really sure what it can be)? I believe we can
speak of a 20 something crowd of financial innovators (we may have to
make clear that we are not actual bankers, just to keep them
friendly).

Thx,

Frederic

AFAIK, you can't. If you want to be able to have a drink and enjoy the
air and sun, I'd suggest the Sky Terrace of Medjool in the Mission. http://www.medjoolsf.com/sky_terrace.htm

It's in the Mission, though, which is a bit more colorful and
relatively far from downtown, but it's an awesome spot for drinks if
the weather is nice.

I don't know what Ecanomy Mondays are. I will check.

I'm sold to 21st Amendment.

If there is not a problem with their Ecanomy Mondays and no one has a
strong objection with it, I'd propose we go for that.

Guillaume, please keep me posted and I'll put the details on
http://post-bcbsf2-pre-finovate09-drink.eventbrite.com/

Thx,

Frederic

Is anyone actually there? It is insanely busy because of the ballgame
I think. We are moving to alternate location.
