Good morning Kevin,

may you ask your IT guys to provide us a manual for how to access the wifi, so we can print it and add it to the welcome package?

Is there anyone fro IT available on Sunday in case we have problems?

Best

Thomas

I think there is some misunderstanding here. Hadn't we finally been told that we would not need to use the SecureW2 client?

We were told not to need a driver download.. so we use it like last year as it was mentioned in Kevins Email..

If so, then those manuals are not right, I think. At least the Windows version is for that driver.

According to those instructions, they still have the unsecured "rmitvnnet" wireless network active. In the past, connecting to that and then configuring the proxy was enough for internet access. Those manuals are overkill, as they guide you to connect to the WPA secured network, to access all of their resources. We don't need that. I think the RMIT technician that gave this to Kevin is not really aware of what we need.

So we need a driver for Windows, and it will NOT work with Linux (what is bad for a technology conference..)?

Wrong :)

The secured wireless works for Linux just like it does for Mac, no driver needed. It uses a somewhat obscure authentication standard, that is not included in the Windows wireless stack, but Mac and Linux have it out of the box.

But we will do just like last year: no need to futz around with the secured wireless. Use the open wireless, and get a username/password for the proxy. We don't need access to all the other RMIT servers, so this is actually the best option, and safest for them, because we stay in the untrusted VLAN.

Last year, Wifi failed completely.
Do we have an idea of the risk this year?

We've heard from Barend that the Proxy has undergone significant upgrades. Can ITS provide more information about how this will improve connectivity for participants? Last year there was a lot of on & off and many people were unable to connect.

Last year the wifi failed precisely due to the proxy server crashing constantly under the load. If they have upgraded it, then I am hopeful that the experience will be much better.

I think we've forgot to include Kevin and ITS in this conversation :-(

@Kevin: could you please let us know the current condition of the proxy server? How has the upgrade improved the load?
