Hi All

It's just over a month now until BarCampApacheOxford (Sunday 11th
September in case you'd forgotten!)

The plan is that we'll have a meal on the evening of Saturday 10th, the
night before the BarCamp. Like last year, we'll likely do this in the form
of meeting for drinks, going for a spot of dinner, then anyone not needing
to dash home can retire to a nearby pub. Nothing to late though, as we'll
want to be up bright and early for the BarCamp on the Sunday!

Does anyone have any thoughts on food styles, restaurants etc?

Ideally we'll probably want something central-ish. Based on previous
years, we'll probably have 30+-10 people, so we'll need a fairly friendly
restaurant to be able to cope with the variability in numbers.... :)

So, any thoughts / ideas / suggestions?

My vote is to have Mohammad cook for us, he seems to be doing
everything else at the moment ;-)

(don't worry Mohammad - that is a smiley you see there)

We've had some good experience of large groups at Al Salam.
http://www.oxfordrestaurantguide.com/al_salam/

They have a set menu, in the past we've said "there will be 35 people
+/- 10. We want a mixed set menu with the starters on the table at
7:30. We'll arrive from 7:15 and we'll call you at 5:30 to give the
final numbers."

With drinks and tips a large group will come out at around £20 per head.

I seem to recall they were our second choice for last year. They certainly
seemed good when I went to speak to them

Would people be happy with Lebanese?

That seems a suitable price to me, I think perhaps even slightly less than
the previous two meals

Great for veggies and vegans. Good range of food. Not hot/spicy (apart
from the very occasional dish which the staff highlight).

OSS Watch have used it for two events. So that's about 50 diners, not
one unhappy customer.

The only problem I've had with it is their inability to provide
multiple copies of a receipt that is useful for tax purposes. It's
worth ensuring that is sorted when booking. I asked the organiser to
do this last time we used it, I'm not sure if they did or not, but it
was not sorted on the night.

I'd say keep your life simple and go for it.

+1

I agree with all Ross says. Good variety of food, good value, good
service. Bad receipts
Would be happy to go there again.

Another +1 from me. One of my faviourite places to eat and have had experience with dealing with large flexibly sized groups with them and it has always gone without a hitch, even when more turned up half way through the meal.

Definitely +1 for Lebanese, especially given that they basically do
vegetarian as the default.

I've had not-brilliant service at Al Salam in the past, but I'm
willing to go off more recent reviews people might have, as that was
something like eight years ago. I feel old now.

As a long-suffering S1 passenger (bus stop opposite), I'd also say:
bear in mind that Park End Street does turn into a kind of
post-apocalyptic waste ground at around 10pm every Friday and
Saturday. We might want to hustle people up to Jericho for post-meal
drinks sooner rather than later in that case, as it's actually quite a
nice journey if you nip along the canal to do it.

Speaking of which: anyone been to see the newly refurbished Old
Bookbinders? Is it a post-meal drinks option? How about the Rickety
Trumpet, or whatever the Radcliffe Arms is called now?

Cheers,
J-P

We can probably meet in the Duke's Cut beforehand, I seem to recall they
do a decent pint of Brakespear and they're almost next door. Probably not
so good for later though, I think it gets a bit crowded.

I think we need an organisers trip to try those two, and the Harcourt Arms
(assuming it's re-opened with the new landlord yet?). Any nights good for
people? :)

A 10 minute wander up the canal seems a better bet than almost-as-long to
the Blenheim or Jude The Obscure

+1 for Duke's Cut beforehand but not after dinner.

+1 for the canal walk.
I really like the new/Old Bookbinders and I've heard the new Radcliffe
Arms is good as well but have not tried it yet. I'd be up for a test drive! :)
Some evening next week would be best .

As an alternative, I hear some good stories about Al-Shami, the Lebanese
place in Jericho, but also haven't tried this one myself. It would be
closer to the nice Jericho pubs.. anyone have any opinion on that one?

Al-Shami is excellent, and again really good at supporting large groups, but they generally get busier so would probably need a bit more notice. Although again I have had really good experience of them dealing with flexible groups. I would say the food and service are slightly better at Al-Shami than Al-Salam, but they are both great.

-0 for The one in Jericho. Not heared up for large groups and I've
heard bad reports (albeit third hand via the DailyInfo site)

Take a look at the reg list on
http://barcamp.org/w/page/400249/BarCampApacheOxford

Some people have indicated they have space available.

I popped in to Al-Salam earlier (it's handily close for me!), and they
seemed happy with the variable numbers of people, and currently have space
on the 10th. The set menu would be 15/head

Al-Salam is probably easier for people to find than Al-Shami. Al-Shami do
list their set menu as being 15/head too. I might try and pop in their
this weekend to have a chat with them about the variable numbers issue

I visited Al-Shami earlier to ask them. They do have space on the 10th,
and do have a suitable set menu. Unfortunately, the vague numbers is a
problem for them on a Saturday. Mid week they're happy with it, but for a
Saturday night they want fairly exact numbers in well in advance (+-2,
rather than the +-10 which we'll likely be able to manage). Given the way
the meal works, I don't think we can satisfy their weekend requirements.

So, I think we'll need to go for Al-Salam, who can cope with the variable
size even on a weekend.
