Hey Mackram, Sami, others!

I'm into it, we're into it... when were you thinking?  About what topic?

I'm gone from end of next week till end of Ramadan, but we can "meet" over Skype and email, and coordinate things...

If things are relevant, I'm encouraging events/etc to happen during Global Entrepreneurship Week in November... doesn't have to be strictly "entrepreneurship", but things related to innovation, etc are also cool (it's pretty open).

Thoughts?

Mackram, please tell us more about what you have in mind?

Cheers!

Munir

Hey Guys

So I would actually be really interested in a Barcamp on Innovation
(granted I could benefit from entrepreneurship as well since i have
just started on that road :D ).

The truth is I would like to have a more of outlined agenda for this
one. Last time the energy was great but most of the sessions were done
in a Lecture kind of way and almost all presenters were not prepared
enough to give a lecture (including yours truly). For this one I would
like to see lecture kind of sessions well prepared and those that are
talk kind set up to be in a talk like fashion (you know seating
arranged in round table form etc...).

As for subjects I would definitely support anything bleeding edge like
innovation in projects people are doing, or maybe some hard research
someone would like to share or (my personal hope) some problems that
people cant solve and would like to throw out there for someone to
pick.

You know for discussion we can still have people vote (via website or
something) to pick the subjects.

Hope I do not sound like hijacking, I would support pretty much
whatever we pick but the above is what I would like to see and had in
mind. My idea for the Barcamp is to come out with something to work on
a direction if you want.Let me know what you think.

Regards,

Mackram

Hello Mackram and all,

I like the idea... I wasn't able to participate in the first one, so maybe I'll get the chance to be part of this upcoming (hopefully) Barcamp.

At any rate, I would like to suggest you guys take in consideration the topics of "Cloud Computing" it really needs alot of research and good work...I'm willing to start working on it and provide material (I was already trying to organize a confere/seminar on this topic sometime in the coming October) so perhaps instead of that seminar I'll integrate the idea in the Barcamp...

What do you say guys?

Hello Makram, Afif,

The nature of Barcamps is not to have traditional lecture style conferences :)

Check these links out :

The idea is that organizers provide a main theme for the event and the sessions are organized "on the spot" by all attendees.

Anyone can organize a Barcamp basically around any topic but the event should be open and flexible enough for attendees to take control of the event collectively. It's all about sharing knowledge and experiences rather than attending predefined lectures. So anyone can bring demos, suggest presentations but in the end, attendees will decide what they want. If there are enough people interested in a sessions, it's on !

Regarding cloud computing, i think it's a great idea but i'm not sure we can attract enough people in Lebanon for a full Barcamp event around cloud computing alone. Please correct me if i'm wrong.

Personally, i'm all in for a Barcamp on Cloud Computing as we're building all our new platforms and services around it :) so we have a lot to share and learn.

I would suggest having a couple of sessions on Cloud Computing within a broader subject. However, if you think we can attract large crouds to this, yalla !

The first Barcamp had about 80 attendees. It would be great to beat that for a second edition :) We really need to get the momentum going again and have people organize Barcamps more often in this country.

Tell me what you think !

Hey All-
Happy Ramadan, folks!  (... to those who celebrate!)

I think great ideas developing here...  A few things...
* While I think "innovation" is a great topic, I also think it is too broad here.... it could mean and apply to a huge range of topics (biotech, construction, education innovation, policy innovation, manufacturing innovation, etc, etc).  On the other hand, "cloud computing" is probably too specific, at least for now (great idea, though, and we could play around with ideas that would be appropriate, etc).  There are a number of topics that I think could be cool, and maybe we could even think of an "innovation series" of Barcamps (topics such as ... "how to foster innovation in Lebanon", "web innovation", "mobile tech innovation", "education/e-learning innovation", "media innovation", "innovating in the cloud", "innovating and crowdsourcing", etc).

As a compromise... what do people think about "innovative tech entrepreneurship" as a topic?  Or possibly just "tech innovation"?

* Afif, can you tell us more about what you were thinking of for the fall?
We (RootSpace, DevIneMedia/Hibr) were not planning on organizing a full "4SITE Forum (Investing in Sustainability, Innovation, Technology, and Entrepreneurship)" like in Nov '09, but we were thinking of organizing something a bit more modest, along the lines of a Barcamp... so maybe it would work and could be really cool to bring all those efforts together to collaborate on organizing one really cool event.  Let know if people have some feedback, ideas, etc on that.

Also... if people are into it... I would suggest we aim to hold this event during Global Entrepreneurship Week in November.  That would give a few months for preparations, but it's not too distant from now.  The official GEW-2010 is being held Nov 15-21, though some countries are doing it Nov 16-18 because of Eid holidays (Eid is tentatively Nov 15-17, plus Leb Independence Day is Nov 22) ...  Doing this in GEW would be a cool way to get some free press, participate in a global event, connect with other efforts, etc...  Is that a good time for people, and a good distance from now?

As for format/etc discussion ... I'm flexible on that, and we can discuss/brainstorm how to make the time most effective for people.

Now, for the critical part... we can discuss more and come to agreement on all the stuff above (and more), but we also need to figure out what time and resources we have available.  Barcamps (intentionally) should be fairly simple to organize, but they still take some work.  Basic needs include setting up and managing the event wiki pages on the Barcamp.org site, figuring out registration issues, finding sponsors for food/etc (unless there is a small fee for participation), finding a location, arranging for food/drinks, arranging for supplies/equipment, etc.   SOOOO... who has some time/energy/enthusiasm to help deal with this stuff?  I guess to start off with someone needs to set up the wiki pages, and then a bunch of this stuff can more easily happen there.  Thoughts?

Depending on feedback on all the stuff above, I'd be happy to set up another wiki page for the event on the Barcamp.org site (since I dealt with a bunch of that stuff before), unless someone else feels inspired/excited/willing to do that... but I'll actually be out of Lebanon for the coming month (from Saturday until mid-Sep), so a lot of the local stuff would have to happen on the ground in Lebs by others.  Thoughts?

Basic info, ideas, etc are up on http://www.barcamp.org/BarCampLebanon ... (though the Lebanon event pages/etc are a bit of a mess... an effort by a volunteer to clear them up a while ago was never completed...).

Thoughts?

Cheers!

Munir

Hello Munir and all...

Glad that you're on board Munir...always a dynamic person driving things forward ;)

Anyway...concerning the "Cloud Computing" well my intention is to focus on the topic itself from different perspectives (Academic, Technical, Economic, Legal, Safety...) ...trying to promote this issue in Lebanon and drive us forward with it...this is due to the simple fact that very very VERY little IT/Tech Proffesionals/Computer Engineers and Scientists know about it in Lebanon and so eventually are not working on it...

I was shocked that some even never have heard of it (and im talking about some serious IT Managers in reputable companies and academic institutions...) anyway...thats my two cents... It probably wont fit as a "theme" for the whole barcamp but i believe its crucial that we here in Lebanon start discussing it...planning for it...etc..

As for the rest...count me in for support and input here and there but I cant commit myself just yet due to my full time job and 3 organizations I'm already managing! hehehe

Enjoy and Ramadan Kareem everyone :D

Hi Folks-
Afif, good points... as a thought/suggestion, let's be sure to include cloud computing in this coming Barcamp, and then gauge interest... then maybe follow-up with a more specific Barcamp on the topic after that... (a good Barcamp can have several hundred people, or 20 people... and still can be a great experience, so we don't need to always aim for topics that will attract a lot of people).

I just wanted to throw this stuff out again...  especially the paragraph that looks like this...

Thoughts?

Mackram?  You have much time to put into this?  Others? (Actually, I don't think there are many on this list... so if we are comfortable with the topic/date/title/etc, then I think we should just go live on the Barcamp wiki and spread the word, and recruit other volunteers to help out with specific things.)

I think the two things that might take a bit of time to figure out are...
- Location (Where could we get a free location? AUB maybe again? ESA? Other ideas?)
- Money (either we try and get $1000 sponsored to cover basic food/supplies... $2000 to also provide shirts, stickers, etc... or no sponsors and we ask people who come to all pitch in $10 to cover food/snacks/etc...)

Regarding DATES .... everyone, please get out your calendar ...  once again, a reminder of key dates... (sorry, I think these got mixed up in my previous email):
* Official GEW-2010: Nov 15-21 (Mon-Sun)
* Alternative GEW-2010: Nov 8-14 (Mon-Sun) (offered as an alternative due to the Eid holiday....)
* Eid Al-Adha holiday: tentatively Nov 15-17 (Mon-Weds)
* Lebanese Independence Day: Nov 22 (Mon)

Thoughts on Saturday, November 13 for the Barcamp?   That way, people who are traveling for the long holidays can stick around for that one day, then head off...

... and just under 3 months from now...

(otherwise, if that that is no good for people or concerns about holidays, I think the next best date would be Dec 4... but that is a while off...)

As for names/stuff...  thoughts on calling this 4SITE/Innovation Barcamp?  4SITE stands for Sustainability, Innovation, Technology, and Entrepreneurship.  My thought is that we might be able to pull in people, possible sponsors, etc who were involved in or attended the 4SITE Forum in Nov '09 ... but also keeping it open for any people/groups/companies/etc to participate as they want...  4SITE itself was also organized as a collaborative effort, so fits in with the Barcamp approach.  Please let us know quick feedback on that.

Cheers,

Munir

Hi Folks,

thanks for the detailed discussions and for starting things rolling. I
am sorry for not being active for a couple of days but I got swamped
with a client and have a major rewrite for one of my products
(possible topic: how time flies when you are a one man show? :P)

Okay on a serious note, let me say the following:
-> I like Munir's suggestion on keeping things open ended. Mainly I
think we want to attract as many geeks (people) as possible so we can
start making smaller groups that work on some specific topic. With
that said I do not think we are yet ready to go there we are too
fragmented (my opinion). Furthermore, personally I prefer to step back
from subjects that are currently hyped cause it tends to cause narrow
vision (again my humble opinion).
-> I do not have super amounts of time, but I am certainly interested
in seeing this happen so I will put the effort to get things done. I
am not particularly sure what things are needed but Munir pointed out
two major things. I will pass by AUB this week and see what is needed
if we are to host the second barcamp there. I am not sure where else
we could find a free place with many rooms (for the separate
sessions). Regarding the money, I have no idea who to go after in this
sector. I am willing to pass by some institutions to ask for some
money but it would really be a big help if someone points out some
possible places.
-> Regarding the time, I suggest that we keep the Nov 13 date. The
longer we push back on the date the higher the odds that it will find
itself slipping.
-> Regarding the naming, I like the 4SITE idea mainly cause it keeps
it open ended. I have not watched the previous one so I am not sure
how it will go. My suggestion is to pick something and add to it
semiAnnul or Annual or something of the sort. The reason is that if we
do that people will come to expect it and we might start a crave.

Okay those were my two cents. In case the are not super coherent
please forgive me I am still in that major rewrite :D.

Regards, Mackram

Hey Folks!
I am into it!  I ran out of time... just about to head to vacation and will be offline until Monday (YAY!) ... I'll check in when back online, and will follow up from there, set up the wiki page, etc... and I'll be back in Lebanon in less than two weeks.

In the meanwhile... please think about the location, that is the main thing that needs to be figured out.

Cheers!

Hey everyone,

I'm currently abroad but would have definitely helped out in the
organization of the event had I been in Beirut.
That brings up the following idea. In order to publicize the event and
increase it's availability to viewers in a similar situation, would
you consider a solution where you could live stream the event
(UStream) or post the presentations on the wiki as the presentations
go by. I haven't seen this done in the previous edition of BarCamp.

Best of luck
Michel

Hello Michel,

Would be great to live stream the event ! This will depend though on the bandwidth we're able to get.

This was done at Arabnet but requires considerable bandwidth ... a rare commodity in Lebanon :(

We will definitely have a live twitter channel though and can record & upload the sessions.

Best regards,

Hey Sami,

I understand the bandwidth limitations. I would have thought about the
streaming just audio, but it doesn't actually make much sense without
the presentation. Here's a possible solution: simply record the
sessions and post them later in the day; it's of course an overhead
for you guys to do it, but I think it'll contribute greatly in placing
BarCamp Beirut on the map.

Cheers

We'll definitely stream something ...

Live :
- Voice
- Slides + Voice
- Webcam stream (low quality)

Post event :
- All content can be uploaded

The other issue with Live is that there can be several simultaneous sessions.

Anyway, i wouldn't worry much about now before we figure out a location.

Hey Everyone,

It has been a while since we posted here. I just wanted to give a
quick update. I talked with Dr Tony Feghali who had helped us with the
first barcamp. In principal he is willing to help us get AUB as
location for the event. I told him that we are aiming for November 13
just before the GEW. I have a call set up with him next Friday (the
24th of Sep) by which time he would have been able to see if there are
any conflicts or such matters. I will keep you updated. In the mean
time do you want me to look for another place as backup (maybe we can
talk to the Beil guys or something).

Let me know what else I should look into.

Okay Guys,

Do not know if anyone has heard yet but we have a small problem.
YallaStartup is doing a StartupWeekend on November 12 to 14 in
Berytech and I can imagine that quite a few of us would want to go to
that event as well (I for one happen to also be volunteering some time
to that and would love to attend). As I mentioned before that I will
be talking to Dr Tony this Friday and would be trying to get the AUB
to give us space but with this little change I would suggest to change
our date (basically because we have not yet announced) so we can
attend both events. I would really appreciate some quick input on this
so when I talk to Dr Tony I discuss the new date rather then a
tentative one. We could try to go for November 20 rather then 13 what
do people think?

Hi Folks-
Hi folks! As for dates once again...

* YallaStartup Weekend, Berytech: Nov 12-14 (Fri-Sun)
* Official GEW-2010: Nov 15-21 (Mon-Sun)
* Alternative GEW-2010: Nov 8-14 (Mon-Sun) (offered as an alternative due to the Eid holiday....)
* Eid Al-Adha holiday: tentatively Nov 15-17 (Mon-Weds)
* Lebanese Independence Day: Nov 22 (Mon)

Because of holidays/etc, it might be better to push it till Nov 27, Saturday... thoughts?

Mackram, please keep me/us posted on what happens with Tony Feghali.... I know him well, and spoke with him last week (about other stuff), and we are planning to meet up soon.  Great that you contacted him...

Since Tony is traveling now (until Thursday, I think), and we are having a casual planning GEW meeting on Friday at Berytech (11am, if anyone is interested in joining), maybe let's stall a few days till we see what days other people are planning things, and we can then adjust/respond as we see fit. The weekends of Nov 20, Nov 27, and Dec 3 are all possible, and all have good/bad points associated with each one...  Regardless of who else comes to the GEW meeting on Friday, I'll report back to you folks what happened, and we can go from there.

As for YallaStartup Weekend, find info here...

Cheers,

DMN

Hey Everyone,

Sorry I have been a bit busy and was unable to catch Dr Feghali
previously. Anyways I talked with Dr Feghali and he is wiling to help
us unfortunately due to some commitments and other conferences, we
would not be able to do the barcamp in the aub until Dec 11. If the
date sounds cool then let me know and I will give Dr Feghali a call to
start things moving. I told him that we need a relatively large room
to fit everyone in (for the intro and close) and then small breakout
places for the discussions.

So guys please let me know.
