Hi guys

Short of APSjobs, what other avenues are there for tracking down jobs
in Canberra?

I'm a software engineer, with a passion for the web. My key skillset
is PHP, Java and frontend technologies (Flash, Ajax, etc), with the
expected associated skills (server admin, HTML/CSS, etc). I don't
really fit the 'APSjobs' mold of '.NET developer', from what I can
gather :)

Any advice? Any contacts? Other communities and such would be great

Cheers,
Josh

Hi Josh,

word of mouth counts for a lot - best way to pick up on stuff is to attend as many of the half-dozen or so web community networking events around town as possible.

This week there is IA Cocktail Hour (iacanberra.org) and Social Media Club (someone else post a link?).

There is also UX Book Club, actKM, WSG, and a lot of CTUBs. I know these work as I've both referred people to jobs through them and been referred myself.

Best regards, Andrew

Oh definitely, you make an obvious point.

I should have mentioned, though, that I'm based in Melbourne, so
getting to most of those events isn't realistic..

So to clarify a bit, I'm mostly after some names on Twitter to follow
(maybe independent recruiters, or people seeking workers) or groups/
communities with websites that maybe of interest..or anything else
along those lines (LinkedIn names, etc) that may be relevant.

(And I'm not looking to coldly harass them for jobs, of course -
merely trying to get a better feel for what's there, introduce myself,
and see if they know of anything for me)

Hi Josh,

Not sure I can help you there - the groups I mentioned have facebook
event pages/mailing lists/wikis etc but the regional tends to have a
fair amount of F2F involved.

Cheers, Andrew

Great, thanks.

And because it seemed ambiguous on re-reading, I'm potentially
relocating to Canberra in a couple of months (depending on the
girlfriend's situation). So I'd be working in-house, all face-to-face
- not remotely from Melbourne.

Ta,
Josh
