Hey guys, I spent a little time prepping one session for YouTube. I
was hoping YouTube had removed their 10 minute limit by now, but
apparently not. As a substitute for YouTube, I threw the video up onto
Google Video per Jeremy's recommendation.

The quality and size has been reduced for YouTube, but may not be
necessary for Google.

The question is, is it worth it to go for a higher resolution? Are you
guys going to watch the videos or just listen to the audio. Or do you
just want to see yourself on Google video? ;-) Basically, the one
that's out there now is no good for watching, but the audio is
bearable.

Please let me know your thoughts.

Personally I would like to see a higher resolution video, unless you
can have a link to the presentation so you can follow while watching
the video. Since you cant really make out the presentation.

How big are the files? Depending on the size, it could be a possibility to host them on someone's server space... we may be able to do it over on The Terminal...

I would say Audio Only and then get presentations from those who have them available, although not everyone used powerpoint or keynote slides.

The file that's out there now is only 38mb, but it's poo. I imagine a
better quality version would be 300mb or so. If we host them somewhere
they should probably be converted to Flash video. I guess we could
make different file formats available for download if someone wants to
convert them. I'm good for one format, but above that and I just don't
have the time. I vote Flash!

I think the only size limitation with Google Video is that if it is over 100mb, you can't upload it via the web interface. You have to download the uploader app.

Also, the higher quality input, the better the output from Google looks from my experience.

In that case, I'd suggest either Blip.tv or Vimeo. I use both and have had no storage issues. Vimeo uses HD vids heavily as well.

Of course, I am not aware of any way around Vimeo's 500MB upload per week limitation.

They're recorded in HD. We might as well publish them in HD. I'll check into Vimeo.

500MB/wk may be a hurdle to work with, though.

I'll be watching the videos for the presentations I missed, and I may
want to look back at some that I was in to review the example code.
If google let's you post 100mb files, then do it.

Also, I started a page on the wiki for everyone to post links to
their slides. Use slideshare.net to post your slides.

any update on the videos .. I had to miss and I am eager to see some of the presentations that were made?

Also, so I don't sound ungrateful ... I really appreciate the service you are providing by taping and editing the videos and posting them ... seriously :)

I'll be out of town for the next few days, but will start cranking
them out when I get back. The current plan is to stick them up on
Google. They seem to have less barriers than some of the competition.

I'm still working out the audio issues with the videos in the big
room. I'm having a very difficult time making it something worth
listening to. I knew it wouldn't be great because we didn't have a
close mic, but the reverb is worse than imagined, and on computer
speakers, almost unbearable. So I'm trying to work some magic in post
to see what I can pull out of it. What videos I can salvage will be
made available on Google, but there is a chance that they might not
make it. Keep your fingers crossed. I'll do my best ;)

So, I tried Vimeo and I'm very impressed with the video quality. The
quality of the video on the web is almost identical to the local copy.

The file that I uploaded was only 65MB. I'm going to try a lower
compression for the next one and try to get it up to 300MB or so in
hopes of being able to see the slides. It will just replace the video
on the link below. That's one thing I really like about Vimeo, the
ability to just swap out the video file w/o losing the comments/meta
data.
