The future of i is open source

We have wrapped up publication of David Vasta's three-part series
introducing i users to Linux, and now we want to move on to reader
tips on open source and PHP on the AS/400. As we've discussed in the
past on Search400.com, the future of i is open source.
The more you can do with i, the less you'll have to deal with
Windows. I spoke with an AS/400 administrator last week who shared
that his company has installed Windows for part of its business, and
that the company has spent more time and money supporting the new
Windows system than it would have spent if it had just made i do the
work. To keep i relevant, half the battle is proving that it really
can do anything.
Share your stories and tips with other readers. As a reader told me
in an email this week, "I want to do what I can to keep this platform
as healthy as possible, and that requires good advice."

You can send a physical file with packed decimal fields to an ASCII
system via iSeries Access or the CPYTOIMPF command and then send the
file with FTP.
