Note: I recommend printing the background pattern at 130% its size, because the size of that oval appears much smaller than the frame when you place a person in between them to take their photo. The extra 30% will help out with the foreshortening effect.

Cut all the white margins off the printing paper. This step takes a LONG time, and you need a GOOD paper cutter, so try and find one at your local office supply store that has a sharp blade. Most office supply stores have a paper cutter available for you in their printing/shipping department.

Lay out and line up the sheets you printed of the background pattern to get feel for how many foam boards you will need to mount the sheets. One way to do this is by placing the foam boards on top of the sheets until you have covered them with foam boards. Since I printed the background pattern at 100% its size, I needed only 2 foam boards on which to mount the sheets. If you print the background pattern at 130% its size as recommended above, you may need 4 foam boards to mount the sheets.

Lay the printed pattern pieces onto the taped foam board to plan their position and make sure the foam board is big enough. Remove the pattern pieces from the foam board, keeping them in order, as you will need them again in just a moment.

Spray the entire foam board with spray adhesive. (Be sure to do this outside where you can breathe!) Then apply the sheets of background pattern to the foam board, piece by piece, matching up the seams carefully.

Trim off all the excess foam board from all pieces using an X-Acto knife or box cutter. Trim right up to the edges of the printed paper. If you accidentally make any tears or rips, use spray adhesive or craft glue to patch it back together.

Now you can tape together the 4 frame foam boards at their seams. Reinforce the back of the frame by taping rulers across the seams. This will help keep the frame from bending or buckling under its own weight.

Use a hot glue gun to glue two frame-hanging eyelets onto the back of the frame at the top-left and top-right positions. Hot glue two eyelets to the back of the background pattern oval as well, also in the top-left and top-right positions. Try to align the eyelets so that they are level on each side. This will help you keep the frame level when you hang it up.

Screw two cup hooks into the ceiling about 3 feet apart (or the width of your background pattern oval). Hang your background pattern oval onto these hooks with some string. You will need an assistant for this part, to help you get it level.

This was so helpful for my costume this year! I printed both the frame and the design at 80% and poked holes for ribbon so I could wear it kind of like a backpack then I also connected the Jess sign to the long tails of ribbon that was left over. Thank you so much for making the template public, definitely my cheapest and favorite costume so far!

My clients very often ask about what size photos to print. What would be the standard UK frame sizes and how to figure this all out. If you are like me who arrived in UK and previously dealt only with metric photo sizes, then whole photo sizes in inches were very confusing at the start.

If you are doing DIY frame project at home, I would recommend starting by looking at the wall and decide on what combinations and sizes frames will work. It is very popular these days to make frame collages in different sizes, but the challenge is to figure out how these print and frame sizes will look together.

Ikea, for example, sells you a template with few frame size combinations, but you are limited to frame finishes. I love the simplicity of this and how easy is to assemble the whole thing. Stick the template on the wall. Add frame hooks in marked places and take the template off the wall.

If you are planning to do like a recycled frame wall. Get some cute vintage frames in different sizes and shapes, then there would be a couple of ways to visualise how these frames would look well together.

You either lay them out on the floor or you get a brown paper roll. Place frames on the paper and cut the shapes out and stick them on the wall. This will give you a good idea of how the combination will look together.

Check what type of hanging mechanism you have at the back of the frame. Sometimes small frames come only with tabletop holder and there is no way to hang these on the wall. Ideally, you would have both options.

Make your own DIY project and you do everything yourself. It will be cheaper, but it will require your own time to get everything right. For this reason, there might be some procrastination to get the project completed. You purchase right size print and frame picture mount separately and assemble everything yourself. Sometimes frames might have a standard 2mm window mount already. Check what is picture mount here.

The third way is not to do window mounted prints at all. My personal preference is always to have a window-mounted print. It just adds that more special feel. The disadvantage of using a window mount is that your actual photo print size becomes smaller. Normally anywhere from 1-2 inches. This would mean that you need to purchase larger frames to have larger prints.

Your printer might offer a few more finishes like metallic paper (achieves high definition in prints, but be careful it ads contrast too), pearl finish paper and fine art papers (these are printed on special papers and finish highly depends on what type of fine art paper they use. Photos can look warmer, darker).

In terms of where to order prints, it all depends on your location. I know that Cosco has a pretty good quality photo print service, locally we have a couple of Kodak shops and few pro labs which print for general pubic too. Try to avoid your standard self-service photo printing, I have done a few tests and print quality is really bad. Colours are way off and photo paper quality is very mediocre.

When you look on my newborn photography gallery you might think that it looks so easy and quick to do. It always surprises clients when I say that session can take up to even 4 hours to get good selection of around 20 images. Yes you heard me right, just 20-30 final images. Each of the poses might take even 30 min to do. Attention to details during the posing is paramount for me.
