Interesting topic. For practising psychologists, and for information's sake, please read through.

Subject: Why is it that so many people who identify as psychotherapists seem to have an aversion to empirical research?
To: Kalafa Shem <bsktot...@gmail.com>

I've noticed in a number of threads that I have read here that a very common reaction to questions such as "What evidence to you have for that assertion?" is "I have 30 years of experience in this area" which will be followed by "Yes, but is there any research to support that claim?" the response will be some sort of comment disparaging the need for research in favour of clinical experience. Given that, in my view, the entire basis for what we (psychotherapists, psychologists, LPC etc.) is research concerning human behaviour and cognition I have always found this response baffling. Can someone enlighten me; or should I conduct a study?

I have noticed that many people who avoid therapy themselves are willing to help others. Why is it so easy to help others but, as humans, so difficult to seek help ourselves?

How do we know things intuitively from birth, which implies knowing and not learning, and they are almost always right? What are your thoughts on this vital part of human nature?

I am thinking more about people with learning difficulties and the legal system possibly thinking more about the crime without fully appreciating is the individual "fit " to stand trial?
