Plot Summary

The story then shifts to the present day, where Casey Newton (Robertson) is a teenage girl who loves science and dreams of becoming an astronaut. She lives in Cape Canaveral, Florida, where her father Eddie (McGraw) is an engineer at NASA who is about to lose his job due to the dismantling of the launch platform. Casey tries to sabotage the demolition by hacking into the system, but she is eventually caught and arrested. Upon her release, she finds a pin with the same "T" symbol among her belongings. She tracks down its origin to a memorabilia shop in Houston, Texas, where she meets the owners Hugo (Key) and Ursula (Hahn), who reveal themselves to be androids sent by Nix to capture anyone who possesses the pin. They attack Casey, but she is rescued by Athena, who has not aged since Frank met her. Athena explains that she is an audio-animatronic recruiter who was designed to find and bring optimistic and creative people to Tomorrowland. Athena takes Casey to Frank's secluded house in New York, where he has become a cynical and reclusive inventor who monitors the world's situation through a device he calls the Monitor. He reveals that Tomorrowland was founded by a group of visionaries who wanted to create a utopia for humanity, but it was corrupted by Nix, who became obsessed with predicting the future using a machine called the Tachyon Generator. The machine showed that the world was heading towards a global catastrophe caused by war, climate change, overpopulation, and other factors. Nix believed that this fate was inevitable and decided to broadcast this negative vision to the people of Earth through the pins, hoping that they would change their ways. However, this only made things worse, as people became more hopeless and resigned to their doom.
Frank also reveals that he was banished from Tomorrowland after he tried to sabotage the Tachyon Generator, and that Athena was deactivated by Nix for helping him. He refuses to help Casey and Athena, but they manage to convince him by showing him that Casey has a positive effect on the Monitor, which briefly shows a brighter future when she is around.
