Dear Vivienne Walker,
Thank you for contacting me about the rules governing the State Pension for people living overseas.
The UK State Pension is payable worldwide to those who qualify for it without regard to nationality. However, State Pensions are only uprated for people living outside the United Kingdom where there is a legal requirement to do so, as is the case, for example, in countries with which UK has a reciprocal agreement to uprate.
I note that this has been the longstanding policy of successive governments for over 70 years. The current Government has no plans to widen Bilateral Social Security Agreements to provide for State Pension uprating where this is not already the case.
For many years, the Department for Work and Pensions has provided clear information for people moving to and living overseas which explains the rules governing State Pension uprating. It is important for people to carefully consider this information when deciding whether to move abroad.
While I recognise that you would like to see a different approach, in my view it is right that priority is given to people living here in the UK when drawing up expenditure plans for additional pensioner benefits. Furthermore, the state of the public finances means tough choices are inevitable. I note that the new Government has inherited a projected overspend of £22 billion for this year, which would, if unaddressed have increased the budget deficit by 25%.
Given these circumstances, in my view the responsible thing to do is to fix the foundations of our economy and bring back economic stability.
Please be assured I will continue to follow any developments in this area closely. Thank you once again for contacting me.
Kind regards,
Michelle Welsh MP

Subject: Frozen Pensions
Good Afternoon Michelle,
I am writing to you about the unfair frozen pension debate.
When my husband and I moved to Australia 18 years ago we had no idea that when we received our state pension it would be frozen at that amount for the rest of our lives.
It seems so unfair as had we have chosen to live in other parts of the world it would increase with inflation as it does in the UK.
On 22nd of October 12pm to 2pm there will be an End of Frozen pension Campaign,
Address Room U, Portcullis House London.
As you are the member of our previous constituency, I would appreciate your attendance and support.
Kind Regards
Vivienne Bentley Walker
