Hi Clive,

Re the exchange below. I have asked BPiA to comment, do you have any comments?

The 3 year timeframe has slipped by without any discussion/comments etc that I'm aware of.
Could we make use of this to our advantage?

Otherwise I truck that you are well

Thanks & Regards

Sorry if this has been asked before what are the numbers of expats whose pensions are frozen ? compared to the number of expats who are index linked ?

John Stanners

It's about 50/50

Mike Ford

I would imagine a large number live in Spain or elsewhere in Europe

Graeme King

The Majority of State Pensioners living overseas receive full uprating. The minority (mostly in Commonwealth countries) are discriminated against by receiving a frozen pension

Graeme King

I read that the EU forced the British Government to uprate for those living in EU countries and from memory the Government said that they would review that position after a period of the UK leaving the EU.

Graeme King

Uprating guarantee for UK State Pension recipients living ...

GOV.UK

https://www.gov.uk › Brexit

1 Sept 2019 — The government will continue to uprate the UK State Pension paid to people living in the EU each year for the next 3 years.

Graeme King

Can anyone comment on the expiry date? Has it expired and if so then is the UK Government going to disallow the uprating to former EU countries i.e. that residents in the former EU countries will have their pensions frozen?

Graeme King

Would be interested in other people’s views/comments

Hi Graeme!

In response to your recent message, if you (or anyone else) want to do
some digging into the numbers of people affected, have a look at
https://stat-xplore.dwp.gov.uk/webapi/home - scroll down on the left
until you see the State Pensions dataset for the relevant information.

Note that the data is sort of up to date as the most recent release has
been delayed and so the latest data is for May 2023. There's more
information on this if you click on the dataset on the page.

Mine is now 23 years of frozen pension - and 23 years of a blatant witholding of 2.5 years FSSU/Civil Service Pension by CSD-who have conveniently destroyed their doucmentation. So my beef is VERY substantial.. however yester day I got my vote back in Wokingham where the ultra far left Sir John Redwood resides for now. When I wrote to him as a long ago resident he simply said he was in accord with his government decision…

Now that his my MP………. Im just wating for the next election…or perhaps all those who have got their votes back might write to out now formal MPs asking what they plan to do before the ext election? The recent numbers below are a useful standpoint.

Does anyone else agree that we all write to our newly recovered MPS on the fozen pnesion matter now or wait until the election is called?

'Organise'recently circulated a template for writing to your MP about tax thresholds for state pensioners to which I added my complaint about frozen pensioners as freezing personal tax thresholds on frozen pensions is a double whammy.
The petition stated that HM government should stop taxing pensioners completely!

Not knit picking but don't  think John Redwood is 'far left'?
Maybe the opposite?

I have kept my name on the electoral role ever since I left the UK.
Problem is our votes will be spread over a number of MPs of differing persuasions and watered down as a result unlike the French who have caucus representative for all expats.
Nearest we got to that was Sir Roger Gale but he has been nobbled by moving him to  Deputy Speaker.
Not the least is the problem of postal voting forms arriving too late (or not at all due to outsourcing/go slow action) for return in time to be counted although they should be added in retrospectively.

Strike while the iron is hot!! Let’s not wait for the election. The volume of our letters could get into the press and cause additional pressure

I have been able to register with a UK electoral office after some difficulty. Now how to arrange a proxy vote. I know no one in my old constituency so  contacted the local Liberal Democrats. They and the Scottish Nationalists are committed to unfreezing our pensions. They fitted me up with a proxy who is one of their committee members.
All we need to do now is for all the other expats in Australia, NZ and Canada to do the same in time for the next election
