I have applied for a vote in upcoming UK elections

However, I left UK in November 1969 and appears they have NO records of
registrations at my address

They Dont keep them forever was their response.  Though they have tried
the Local government and council

So any suggestions on where I can prove me living at the last address in UK

I have checked my paperwork I kept but obviously 52+ years is a long time

Regards

Terry

Hi Terry. I've been pondering the exact same issue.
I know my final address in Norfolk before moving to Australia but no records like rates etc. So good luck if you can sort it out. Be interested to know how you go. Good luck. John

If you owned a house it would be on the title.

Hi Terry!

Check out the attestation option that is discussed in https://www.britishineurope.org/articles/136295-bie-seasonal-greetings-getting-ready-to-vote-blog-2-faqs

There are two questions that discuss it directly,

  • What is the attestation option?
  • Who can provide an attestation?

and then it gets a mention in the I’ve moved around a lot since leaving the UK and don’t have any of the documents on the list. Does that mean I cannot register? question which suggests that it can be used for your address as well.

There is also a question I moved abroad over ten years ago and cannot remember if I was registered to vote. How do I prove this? that talks about records being archived in county libraries and the British Library that you might be able to use.

The main problems is that the acceptable connected official bodies with your full name and the last physical address almost all were invented after I left the uk in 1976 so that sharply constrains our options(I hardly think this was an accident, probably by intention)

Also even if you have continuous National insurance pension my constituency refused to honour that as, although I hade provided the correct 1976 post code they now appear to say that they can’t verify the address at all were changed in 1995

Another clearly intentional excluder!

I did find an official document that could have been verified by reference to them-it was  what would probably be called a motogp international competition licence with all the details that they claimed to need but they refused it

The problem is that this revised recently list is very restrictive for all older people

However: if you have started the process and got far enough to be told your supporting materials were insufficient you WILL have an application reference number

Request a copy of the affirmation form (there is a list people acceptable to complete them) and that can be used

I supplied two ex directors of companies, one retired senior civil servant, one ex solicitor

All contemporaries so no longer in role but definitely in good standing (I have one retired Vicar ma(oxon) TD in reserve)

The list of acceptable people defined as being of good standing does not necessarily excluded such people now retired but that is the next hurdle I suspect for us to jump- so try asking for the affirmation form and the list of people in good standing who can affirm for you!

Good luck-I’m awaiting my submissions acceptance or otherwise!

I have finally succeeded in getting my voter registration completed. Remembering my last address in the UK back in 1993 was the first hurdle. I remember whereabouts the house was and trawled Google Maps to try to find it. Eventually I remembered the street and was able to get the address, but I was only there for a few months and don't think I ever voted from there. Submitting that flagged up no record of me being registered at that address. Some email correspondence with the (in my case) Birmingham Elections Office, including my suggesting a previous address where I had lived for many years, led to the need for me to find someone to attest to my bona-fides. That might be a problem for those with no connections left there and family don't count. However, my sister's partner was able to carry that out and eventually I was approved. He will also be my proxy voter when the time comes but that is a hurdle to jump later.

My attestor's final quip was that why was I bothering when there was nobody left worth voting for. From what I see from here in Australia I might agree with him.

Hi Alan,

Once you are registered in a specific electorate, you should be writing to your MP and asking for help in reinstating the indexation of the British state pension for Australian residents.

When you discover other candidates, you should do the same for them

I had the same problem. A newspaper cutting of me standing for parliament in 1966 was rejected but I eventually found a valuation of antiques with my name and address on it.
Good luck

For those with difficulty proving  past residence help may come from an old Kellys Directory. I have on my bookshelf a copy  of the Southampton directory for 1966. I believe that many are available on-line. Here are a couple of sources..

What “national insurance card” I’ve never had one!

Also my constituency refused to accept the NI documentation I gave them- because it had the correct address at the time-and the postcode had been changed in 1995 so they claimed it was not possible to verify!
