Curt and Dry

Sub Heading:
Pune might just be India’s grumpiest city—and its residents aren’t shy about it.

TO A VISITOR IN PUNE, the city’s ubiquitous Marathi signboards might not look particularly remarkable. But ask a local to translate a few, and it becomes clear that, although these signs are instructions to the public, they also express a particular Puneri trait: rudeness. An example of their unsmiling tone can be found in this sign outside a house on Tilak Road: “Our children are not well brought up. They deflate your tyres.”

loved the poems:)
I do agree that people in Pune are not as friendly  while talking to strangers as they are in cities like Mumbai, Delhi, Jaipur and probably Calcutta, but I would still not call them rude. The reasons are many. I personally have come across many cute Punekars including the people at the tapri, library and bus stops, and people like autowalas (though there are some exceptions in this case), cycle shop etc.

Also, wonder why we have never noticed any of these sign boards......because they are all in Marathi. Now, for a person who doesn't know Marathi, it is impossible to understand the sign boards and get offended. So, even if we say that all Punekars are rude, they are that only amongst themselves, which  means that they understand and know how to deal with each other.

I am sorry for some of the crap above. I cant take anything against that city right now. Missing that place like anything...;)

Thanks su, for putting the links.

I agree. My bhaiyas are sweethearts (and all remember me still :P ). Library staff (only the males, please) are also very humble.
but generally, people on the buses, on the streets were rude-sounding.
Anyway, Pune, as a city with selective inhabitants, does rock and I miss it too :'(
