NOTE: other than the user profile, LibreOffice considers the configuration for all users you can find in the subfolders inside the main installation folder (for example, /opt/libreoffice/share on Linux for the "official" LibreOffice build, or \Program files\libreoffice\share on Windows)

I think it is safe to say that LibreOffice does not contain any backdoors or spyware and does not send your files over the Internet. LibreOffice is as secure as any other word processor such as OpenOffice or Microsoft Word. You could even say it is more secure, since it is open source and it would be pretty hard to hide malicious code in it.

You are safer with libreoffice. What you mention about telemetry (i.e. a program collecting information on how it is used and sending to the author's server) doesn't happen with libreoffice, but does happen with Microsoft word and apple's clone.

This tutorial explains how to start LibreOffice (Writer, Calc, Impress, etc.) in safe mode. The steps shown below are identical on all operating systems where LibreOffice Suite is available.

To address these issues, starting LibreOffice in safe mode can fix the underlying problems by removing all user-made customization and resetting all settings to their default state. In safe mode, LibreOffice disables extensions, custom settings, and hardware accelerations, allowing users to diagnose and resolve issues.

my LibreOffice fresh install keeps crashing once I open the "Options" window. This happened for both version 7.3.1 and 7.3.2. Am I the only one with that issue? Both starting in safe mode and entirely deleting the user profile did not help, neither did disabling OpenCL and OpenGL...

I used "strace -f -o dump.txt libreoffice --safe-mode" to maybe see a bit better what's going on. In the last few lines there I saw that it tried to load a "libZXing" library. I recalled that this particular library, useful for decoding Aztec and DataMatrix codes, hadn't been in the official repos, or at least only a version without the binary in /usr/bin - and ineed I had installed the AUR version, providing that library.

I set libreoffice calc as a permitted application in SEB for Win 2.4, accurately using the suggested setting for java programs as in documentation (identifier, window handling process, path).
However each and everytime I run it I see libreoffice starting but then immediately hiding, not being visible anymore. Clicking on the icon in the taskbar does not help, nothing happens.
Then, when I exit SEB and start it again, I find libreoffice running as first thing, and it is even usable before inserting the requested password. But if I insert the password, things go berserk...
Any help would be GREATLY appreciated, I am really going mad on this after 3 days of useless trials....
Thanks

Hi! I have now tried the beta 3 windows version. In that version the Window Handling Process and identifier field have disappeared, so you cannot apply the suggestions of the documentation. That said, I reused the .seb file from 2.4 opening and saving it in the updated config tool. Leaving the three items mentioned before in the permitted process list, each one in turn or togheter, alas the behaviour remains the same: the application get launched and immediately hidden.
If I activate only scalc.exe, each time I click on the icon in SEB I get a new calc window external to seb and not reachable while in SEB; when I exit SEB, I find all these windows open outside of it.
If I activate soffice.exe too, these windows do not get opened outside nor inside SEB. In the end, my hopes were not fulfilled... there is still some detail that needs to be cleared about why SEB sees libreoffice as a forbidden application no matter what.

Thank you, you're being very kind. I unistalled 2.4 and installed 3.00 beta, without difficulties. Then I launched the seb file you have attached: as before, unfortunately, any effort to launch one of the libreoffice apps shown in the sidebar get hidden immediately after starting. If it could be of any use, I could attach some of the log files; in this case please let me know which of the many log files could be useful. By the way, every time I launched any seb file, when stating SEB showed me the alert attached here. Regardless of the yes or no answer, everytime this alert pop up again. If I say yes, SEB closes; if I say no, SEB starts but I do not know if this is of any consequence. any hint?
Thank you again
PS if again it could be of use, I can record a video screen capture clip to show what is happening here...

The safest way to handle such documents though, is to just not open them. If you did not expressly use some copy machine which e-mails you documents in MS Office formats, then it's almost certainly going to be spam/malware.

Yes. I use it on my server. Atm seems the most reliable solution. DocumentsApp tends to crap out when loosing connection to the server turning the documents to be unreadable any more, and collabora is just slow atm and does not let two ppl edit document at the same time (at least not when I checked last time).
The only problem is of course the fact that those pads are public. The randomized pad names solve the problem (at least makes it harder to find pads), but I cannot guarantee they are safe. I still havent found a solution to basically put a lock (password) on the pads you would prefer to have private. I hope someone figures something out soon. Of course there are things like titanpad and mypad plugin but as I use LDAP I wouldnt want to have yet another set of credentials. I would just prefer simple password lock like when sharing file via NC/OC.

hi.
i wish to use libreoffice, but unfortunately it does not support diacritic in persian and arabic and also, its not very accessible and user friendly for blinds and screen reader users.
i have version 5.3 on windows xp, and in general, love opensource products.
but i cant use it for the reasons that mentioned above!
can you please help me?
for me, if it was librewriter with screen reader perfect support and supporting diacritics, it its better than whole office suite that i really cant use!
i really need only writer for perfect support for my needs.
God bless you and thanks for your blog!

Relative to libreoffice, didn't know use /tmp/. In fact i don't use it, but I'm thinking that Thunderbird also can use it too for opening docs inside, so sure other software need it to run. Anyway Ubuntu can create a separate partition for /tmp/, like /var/ or /boot/, and also is possible to crypt this, or change default path /tmp/ for another, or reallocate it into /home/ making a link.

I also have the doubt that "old" must mean "deprecated" or "unsafe". So in Ubuntu how much code is in fact "unsafe"?? If Ecryptfs have some bugs, well, I don't mean it would be the only manner to decrypt /home, although in my case the restoration always worked perfectly. But perhaps could be "enough" if you use another backup systems regularly.

You're true right, Gordon. In fact, it's much safe use LUKS like I commented, so I really agree with Ubuntu default full disk encryption (if you use only Ubuntu). On two of my three computers I use this indeed with success.
For commenting, it seems tmp/ path autodeletes when every app stop using it for store temp files. Yeah, when shutdown, almost in my case, not docs or img are rested, includding hidden files.

Even though the /home data may be "safe" and scrambled at rest , the remainder of the file system is exposed for tampering with who knows what - a keylogger, a hidden script or software modifications. That's just ready for a compromised system after you've logged in! It's very unlikely of course, especially in a restaurant, but there could be someone with shifty eyes leaving USB drives on the ground... As they say, a chain is only as strong as its weakest link.

Hi,
After installing the latest version of LO and following the instruction in this post and here, spelling and grammar mistakes are not underlined. I tried restarting in safe mode and repeating the steps, but the problem persists with all languages except German. Any ideas why this is happening (I am using an ARM processor)? I am attaching my test file.
Test-Languagetool-multiple-l.odt (58.1 KB)

Bookmarks are only valid in the scope of the current result set and are not interchangeable between result sets. A bookmark could be a complex data structure, so it could not be compared in a safe way. Because of that, a provider has to implement the compare method for bookmarks.
