The big problem is that Vienna is EXTREMELY expensive ($15,000+). If your just starting out and want the best bang for your buck, i have to recommend REFX's "Hollywood" expansion packs for Nexus 2. So far there are 3 and they all contain traditional and some non traditional orchestral instruments. The second pack has an entire Orchestra jam packed into it, along side several excellent Steinway piano samples and much more. If you would like to check out what comes in each pack, here are the links. Hollywood: Hollywood 2: -2-bundle/ Hollywood 3: -3-bundle/
The Good: You get a wide variety of samples. Percussion, piano, orchestral and synths for an excellent price. Nexus is $249 and the packs vary in prices but so far aren't over $300. Hollywood 2 is $269 for the complete bundle but you can get the individual expansions for $90 each. You aren't forced to by it all. So if you want those epic Steinway samples you can pick up the "Core Library" and not have to buy everything else. They are far from flawless but they give the young composer an opportunity to score without spending an arm and a leg on the super professional samples (which also requires a Kontakt sampler and a big hard drive).
So I ended up getting reFX Nexus 2 for Christmas and it has been working fine. However, today I tried installing the free expansion packs and Nexus has not been working right. For example, I am no longer able to listen to the notes being played in Nexus when I use my keyboard or MIDI. The default preset Nexus starts up on works fine, but when I change presets and try to play notes, no sound comes out of Nexus. It was not like this at all before. If anyone has any solution to this problem feel free to let me know as this is really frustrating me, thank you :)
does anyone own the nexus 4, and expansion packs, just done a reinstall of my os, downloaded from refx portal, would not show in factory directory, looked in nexus nks folder, no nksf preset files, messaged refx about it, they have just told me they have dropped support for nks, bummer, so i really need the nksf files to get nexus back up and running in my s series mk2, browser wise, would be a great help
I am updating my old nexus libraries and have all expansions so will have something available soon along with vanguard. As you can imagine, there are a LOT of files and will take some time to process and tag everything.
ReFX Nexus is great for beat-making purposes. That said, a beatmaker/producer needs to have a large arsenal of sounds to create electrifying, thumping beats, and Nexus expansion packs are a great way to expand your sound library.
Despite being free, these expansion packs can very well be used to create a professional beat. The producer is ultimately responsible for the outcome and not the preset library. The creative process, along with mixing, mastering, and editing is what makes a beat professional.
Free Nexus Expansion Packs are definitely worth it because they provide more creative options for producers. These expansion packs can be used to create professional-sounding beats with the right mixing, mastering, and editing.
