Amal A Alsufyani joined Montgomery college on January 2018 as a part time faulty because she enjoys science education. She has a strong background in teaching, curriculum design and mentoring undergraduates to postbac, specifically pre-med students. She is a full time premedical training program developer at the Office of Intramural Training & Education, at the NIH. Her goal is to engage students in an active learning environment where they would be both academically challenged and supported.
Before joining Montgomery College, I taught Agricultural Zoology, and Ecology at Comahue National University, Argentina. Currently, I teach and/or have taught at Montgomery College General Biology (BIOL 101, BIOL 101L) and Environmental Biology (105, 106).
Olivia Dickens joined Montgomery College as Part Time Faculty in Fall of 2023. She received her Bachelor's degree from Howard University and her Doctorate from the University of Pennsylvania. Outside of her duties at Montgomery College, she works as a scientist in Industry.
I am a brand new ATPA Coach and am very excited to help Montgomery College students achieve their academic dreams and succeed in courses.
I am currently teaching as Assistant Professor of Biology (part-time) at the Northern Virginia Community College.
In addition, I teach Zoology lab at the Northern Virginia Community College, Alexandria campus. During the course, my students explore comparative anatomy of vertebrates and invertebrates through the series of dissections and external anatomical observations of various animal phylum including cnidarians, echinoderms, cartilaginous and bony fishes.
I received my bachelor's degree from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro (go Spartans). I continued with my master's degree at Case Western Reserve University, where I graduated in December of 2022. My attitude towards service and teaching led me into the role of a teaching assistant in my second year of the program. I aimed to inspire and motivate as many first-year students as possible. I currently have over three years of teaching experience and many more years as a student; thus, I understand the challenges students face. I hope to inspire learners to believe in themselves and to enjoy the highs and lows that accompany the learning process.
As a masters student, I studied the regulation of mitochondrial respiratory complexes. In my PhD, I expanded this to investigate the effects of iron metabolism disruption in neurodegenerative disorders with a focus on behavioral deficits. I joined Montgomery College in Fall 2022 to teach Principles of Biology (BIOL 150) and serve as an embedded coach for BIOL 150.
As an Instructional Lab Manager, I supervise all lab support staff and ensure the day-to-day operation of the laboratories. I also oversee budget, lead and assist in lab curriculum development. In addition, I am also responsible for implementation of safety guidelines, and make sure that all faculty and staff complete required training. I also teach Principles of Biology I (BIOL 150) and Microbiology (BIOL 210) as a Part-time faculty.
My doctoral research was on gene expression in the liver. Prior to joining Montgomery College in 2012, I was a research fellow at the National Institutes of Health. I have done my post-doctoral fellowship at the Johns Hopkins University where I also served as a research faculty. I have worked on brain specific gene expression and characterization, and have published my findings in prestigious journals like Neuron, Cell, etc.
I joined the Montgomery College Biology Department in 2024 as an Instructional Assistant. Prior to that, I worked for Life Technologies in their DNA synthesis lab (Invitrogen/Custom Primers Inc.) where I worked on large scale DNA synthesis, Page and HPLC purification for over a decade. I also have experience working at Lonza Inc. for about a year as a lab associate. My work there was on Cell Culture purification. More recently, I have worked as a Technical Associate at Qiagen Inc. with a focus on Plate Coating among other things.
Muhammad Yunus (born 28 June 1940) is a Bangladeshi social entrepreneur, banker, economist and civil society leader who was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2006 for founding the Grameen Bank and pioneering the concepts of microcredit and microfinance.[1] These loans are given to entrepreneurs that are too poor to qualify for traditional bank loans. Yunus and the Grameen Bank were jointly awarded the Nobel Peace Prize "for their efforts through microcredit to create economic and social development from below". The Norwegian Nobel Committee said that "lasting peace cannot be achieved unless large population groups find ways in which to break out of poverty" and that "across cultures and civilizations, Yunus and Grameen Bank have shown that even the poorest of the poor can work to bring about their own development".[2] Yunus has received several other national and international honours. He received the United States Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2009 and the Congressional Gold Medal in 2010.[3]
In 2012, he became Chancellor of Glasgow Caledonian University in Scotland, a position he held until 2018.[4][5] Previously, he was a professor of economics at Chittagong University in Bangladesh.[6] He published several books related to his finance work. He is a founding board member of Grameen America and Grameen Foundation, which support microcredit.
The third of nine children,[8] Muhammad Yunus was born on 28 June 1940 to a Bengali Muslim family in the village of Bathua, by the Kaptai road in Hathazari, Chittagong in the Bengal Presidency of the British Raj (present day Bangladesh).[9][10] His father was Hazi Dula Mia Shoudagar, a jeweler, and his mother was Sufia Khatun. His early childhood was spent in the village. In 1944, his family moved to the city of Chittagong, and he moved from his village school to Lamabazar Primary School.[9][11] By 1949, his mother was afflicted with psychological illness.[10] Later, he passed the matriculation examination from Chittagong Collegiate School ranking 16th of 39,000 students in East Pakistan.[11] During his school years, he was an active Boy Scout, and travelled to West Pakistan and India in 1952, and to Canada in 1955 to attend Jamborees.[11] Later, while Yunus was studying at Chittagong College, he became active in cultural activities and won awards for drama.[11] In 1957, he enrolled in the Department of Economics at Dhaka University and completed his BA in 1960 and MA in 1961.
