A DAY TO REMEMBER!
Forget the Vaynol Festival, there was only one event of note over the last bank holiday weekend, that was the Bangor City Legends Reunion & Challenge Match.
The let down by Everton for the original match became a race against time for the BCFCSA and Chairman Mike Ishmael in particular to stage an event worthy of accommodating the Bangor Legends whom had already given assurances that they would be attending.
Hundreds of calls, letters & emails later by Mike & Sian, promised something much better – two teams of Bangor Legends!
Some 150 – 200 people came through the gate to revel in the sight that greeted them of former players inspecting the immaculate turf they had graced so well over the years.
One of the first into the ground was the charming Ken Birch, captain of the 1962 Napoli playing side, he was joined by his family. Not far behind him was Pat Olney, my first BCFC hero, Pat had made the effort to come up from Cardiff for the weekend, he was joined by former team mates Gary Edwards & Phil Lunn to reminisce about the good old days. Further Legends who were in attendance but not playing were Iorys Griffiths, Ivor Roberts, Gareth Salisbury and Maldwyn Evans.
The non playing Legends were introduced to the two teams as guests of honour prior to kick off. For the record the squads were:
BLUES YELLOWS
Trevor Ball Gareth Hughes
Phil Lunn Nigel Barry
Kevin Mooney Ben Ogilvy
Derek Goulding Scott Williams
Jack Mooney Dafydd Owen
Neville Powell Emrys Williams
Dave Barnett Mel McGuinness
Reggie McGuire Paul Whelan
Tony Livens Neil Hughes
Dave Fuller Phil Priestley
Sion Edwards Lee Noble
Les Armor Steve Flower
Liam Goulding Craig Whelan
You will probably notice two Mooneys, two Whelan’s & two Gouldings in the line ups, the inclusion by Kevin, Paul & Derek of their very talented sons gave a great sense of occasion to the day, and more importantly perhaps, an insight into the future of Bangor City??? We also had cameo appearances on the pitch by club Officials Robin Jones & Gwyn Davies
The final score if it mattered was was 4-3 to the Yellows, with scorers for the Blues, Reggie McGuire, Liam Goulding & Derek Goulding and for the Yellows Phil Priestley (who shunned the offer of the keepers jersey!), Lee Noble (who claimed he hadn’t played since the 1998 Welsh Cup Final!) and Paul Whelan (scores everywhere, BCFCSA Sevens, Wembley etc etc).
The Legends and their families shared a pint and a few tales at the Regency after, what a sight that was! Oh to turn back the clock to the good old days – I know, it ain’t gonna happen, but thanks for the memories lads, you are Legends one & all.
