I am e mailing regarding the article 'Plotting the city's future' dated August the 8'th in the local press. I read the article with

Interest and I totally agree that there is a need for a forum to discuss the way forward in ’an exciting time for Bangor’.

However I would like to comment on a remark made by Cllr Marshall where she said “We believe in Bangor and we need to keep developing the City, because if you don’t you just stagnate.”

I would like to ask Cllr Marshall this question. Does she agree that the biggest and most productive development to be planned for Bangor in recent times was the proposed 3000 seated stadium for the City of Bangor. Does she also agree that not only could the stadium be used to host Wales U21 International matches but also could be used for School’s sporting events , Concerts and many other events which would generate much needed funds into the community.

Would she also agree that this is exactly what the city of Bangor needs to keep up with the thriving local towns such as Llandudno?.

If the answers to the above were yes then why were the local Democrats so against the proposal for developments at Nantporth ?

Bangor City Football Club will soon be moving into a new stadium at Nantporth with only 600 seats. Yes there is scope for future developments through grants ect for the Club and I am sure the Club will take full advantage of this.

I am not blaming the Lib Dems for not having a 3000 seated stadium because we are all aware that Gwynedd Council made the decision following pressure from local people on Anglesey.

However if the Lib Dems had backed the proposal in the beginning then Yes, we could well have had a new state of the art 3000 seated stadium and I find it hard to believe now that those same councillors who were against the plans for Nantporth can make the statement above about believing in Bangor !.

I truly hope now that the City Councillors do believe in future developments and do all in their powers to bring through proposals such as a skate boarding park, Multiplex cinema, Beach Road development, a new swimming pool ect ect and not just blocks of flats after blocks of flats.

As a person who hasn't seen the article, could you elaborate more on
what has been said. We don't all get the local paper and it would be
good to be able join in this debate if we had more info.
Many thanks

I was very interested to read the comments on Bangor City Football
Stadium. I wonder if the author is aware that, from the very
beginning when it was first mooted that a developer was interested in
buying the Farrar Road Stadium, no Bangor City Councillor has been
allowed to take part in any discussion relating to the building of a
new stadium or the future use of the old site. As the City Council is
the owner of the Farrar Road site it was deemed that we had an
interest in the planning process and consequently we were barred from
saying anything about the proposals or voting on them either in the
Bangor City Council Chamber or in the Gwynedd Council Planning
committee. Equally we were not allowed to make public statements in
the press. This is a matter of record which can be checked with the
Town Clerk of Bangor or the Monitoring Officer of Gwynedd Council.

It seems strange, therefore, that the writer can assert with such
confidence that I and the Liberal Democrat group have opposed a new
Football Stadium for Bangor or that we could well have had a 3000 seat
stadium had the Liberal Democrats backed the proposal from the
beginning. I am at a loss to know how he has come to these
conclusions as we were not in a position to support or oppose anything
about the scheme.

However, on a more positive note, I am very pleased to read that he
supports the new Business Forum and I can assure him that I am also
totally supportive of the Forum which is dedicated to achieving the
very best for our City. I do believe that we have an exciting
opportunity to see inward investment into Bangor which will help our
businesses and our citizens and I hope that this is something which we
can all support.

How absolutely marvelous that our councillors are prepared to answer
on the city's messageboard. It proves by working together and using
this board for constructive debate we will get places.
Well done councillor Marshall for showing the way and more imporantly
making such a valuable point.
