Many organisations need to be notified of your new address when you move. That includes your driving licence, and the DVLA needs to be informed of your new address to avoid any financial penalties. This guide will cover everything you need to know about notifying a change of address on your driving licence.

You must notify the DVLA of your new address whether you hold a full or provisional licence. There are a couple of options for changing your address on your driving licence; you can apply online or by post. When applying via post, the process is different depending on whether you have a paper or photocard driving licence. If you want to update your name at the same time as your address, you must apply by post. When filling out your application, you will be asked for:

To change your address on your licence online, you will need to head over to the DVLA change the address on your driving licence page. To change address by post, you'll need to fill out the "changes" section on the D741 form that came with your licence. If you do not have your D741 form, you'll have to use licence application form D1 for cars and motorcycles or D2 for lorries and buses. You can get these forms from your local Post Office.

Updating your address with the DVLA ensures that any correspondence can get to you at your address. If you get a parking ticket that goes to your old address, it could lead to the parking ticket incurring more charges. You also need to ensure that the address on your licence matches the address on your car insurance to avoid any delay in insurance claims.

Yes, you should update your address on your driving licence when you go to university. You want to make sure that all correspondence from the DVLA gets to you without risking any fines. We recommend setting up a Royal Mail redirection for holiday times when you are not at university. You must make sure that you inform your car insurance company of your university address if you plan to take your car with you.

If you can't return both parts of your driving licence you must give a reason why and you'll need to pay for a replacement licence. If your licence is due to expire (run out) within the next 12 months you can consider applying to renew it now instead of replacing it. Either way costs the same.

If your name has changed from that on your existing licence you must fill in and return a driving licence application form (DL1 or DL2 if you have a lorry or bus driving licence) along with the right identity documents. You can get DL1 and DL2 forms from Post Offices.

When you create an account you can link your licence so the information from your driving record shows on screen. DVA will also send you updates on your application, such as when it has been processed.

You will need to fill out the relevant sections of the D1 form, provide your old licence, and offer original documents which can act as confirmation that you are using a new name. This could include a deed poll (which many companies can help you out with inexpensively to ensure the legal wording is right), or your marriage certificate.

Lastly, if you pay your vehicle tax by Direct Debit, you need to phone the authorities to let them know about the address change as any correspondence will end up going to the wrong place. The number to do this is 0300 790 6802.

The current drivers licence fee for address change is 14. You can pay by Visa, MasterCard, Maestro, Electron, or Delta debit or credit card. The service is free for people over 70 or those with a medical short period licence.

Note: The DVLA try to send new photocard driving licences within three (3) weeks. But, it can take longer if they need to check any medical details or personal information. Allow at least 3 weeks before contacting the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency.

Moving home can be both an exciting and stressful experience. One way to make the process smoother and more budget-friendly is by taking matters into your own hands with a do-it-yourself (DIY) move using a removal van hire. This approach allows you to have full control over your moving timeline, packing, and transportation. Hiring a removal van for a DIY move offers several benefits, including significant cost savings compared to hiring a full-service moving company, greater flexibility in scheduling, and the satisfaction of a hands-on, self-directed relocation.
