Students made to join Nanak's rally
Gazipur, Oct 10 (bdnews24.com)Students were taken out on the street for a reception of State Minister for LGRD Jahangir Kabir Nanak at Gazipur on Wednesday despite a prohibition by the Education Ministry.

Nanak attended a rally organised by local Awami League in the afternoon at Kumun Government Primary School ground at Baria union under the Sadar upazila.

Allegations have it that students of at least seven high schools, primary schools and madrasas were not allowed to return home after school hours and forced to take part in the programme.

Teachers and students were seen trudging long distances to attend the rally carrying banners. The school-children were also seen crowding the shops around the rally site for food and water.

Requesting anonymity, a student of Aturi Adarsha High School told bdnews24.com : "The teachers did not allow us to return home after the exams and brought us to the rally."

Organisers said at least 700 students of Bhawal Baria Union High School, Aturi Adarsha High School, Kalni Adarsha Fazil Madrash, Hatiabandha Madrasa and other kindergarten schools took part.

Parent of a student of Bhawal Baria Union High School, Nazmul Islam, told bdnews24.com : "The leaders give big speeches for development of the country. But these children were made to stand and sit in the rally after daylong studies without food."

A local teacher, speaking on condition that he not be named, said the organisers declared the attendance of students in the rally compulsory. He added that even though food arrangements were made for students, those were not enough.

Baria Union Chairman Habibur Rahman Habib, who was also the chief of the rally's convening committee, admitted bringing the students to the programme.

He claimed the students 'attended' the rally to press for demands of the schools including power connections.

He added each school was given Tk 2000 to provide the students with tiffin.
