Subject: Calling for Proposals for Applied Research Project

Good Afternoon,

World Forestry Day has been celebrated around the world for 30 years to remind communities of the importance of forests and the many benefits which we gain from them. The concept of having a World Forestry Day originated at the 23rd General Assembly of the European Confederation of Agriculture in 1971. Later that year, the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation gave support to the idea believing the event would contribute a great deal to public awareness of the importance of forests and agreed that it should be observed every year around the world.

In this spirit, USAID’s Integrated Protected Area Co-management (IPAC) Project and the Environment & Climate Changes Projects of GIZ Bangladesh call on proposals for applied research project focusing on community forestry and participatory monitoring of natural resources in ECAs. The project grant of TK 300,000 will be awarded on World Forestry Day, March 21, 2013 for the implementation of the winning project proposal. Submissions are welcome from university level students or early career researchers, who have project ideas for innovative monitoring of biodiversity conservation and natural resource use. The research project should ideally also include an element of local community outreach and awareness building

The project proposals meet the following requirements:

1.    The project must have a biodiversity/nature conservation monitoring focus
2.    The project must have an element of local community involvement of the areas selected (i.e. participatory monitoring, awareness raising activities etc.)
3.    The project should focus on the Sundarbans Mangroves forests or the forests of Chunati Wildlife Sanctuary
4.    The impact of the project must be pragmatic and measurable
5.    The project must be completed by December 2013
6.    A report must be submitted within a month after the completion of the project
The following types of projects will not generally be eligible:
•    Projects outside Bangladesh
•    Pure research with no obvious conservation benefit
•    Expeditions, particularly where the applicant has to raise funds in order to participate
•    Attending conferences or seminars

The short-listing of projects to be identified for awards will be done by IPAC by the end of February while the final selection will be decided by a panel consisting of GIZ, IPAC and the Ministry of Environment and Forests.
Please send the complete application (attached) to if...@irgd.com by February 20, 2013
An individual can submit up to 2 proposals

Thank you,
