starting on non-ruby/rails part of app dev

Hi all,

At the outset, I must admit I'm pretty new to web development, though I have been in the industry for many years now. I came across rails close to an year back and have followed it's evolution as a personal interest. Now, I am pretty OK with ruby coding and rails features. 

However, its the other non-ruby/rails part that I feel I am lacking. Whenever I write a small web-app, without the design and CSS/JS everything looks bland. Hence I was wondering if anyone could point me as to how to get started on the same. Please do remember that I am keen to learn and experiment. And also since I'm doing this as a personal interest, I don't want to work with any design engineer either. I have read about some HAML and other such utilities, but not sure how to start.

Should I just sit down and read the CSS, HTML and JS books? Or are there any rails specific utilities that will help? How should I approach the non-rails part.

Hey Rajmohan,

 

I assume you are a quite experienced person and understand you can correlate what you learn to different technologies.

 

What I suggest you to do is that you dont have to read big books to know everything...but you could get some ideas by reading the stuff in www.w3schools.com. Its a great place to learn things faster

Before starting with rails specific utilities. U should knw something about the css, js, html. And I'll suggest u should go ahead with books, blog, community. And also while practicing use a software call 'firebug' (a plugin for firfox) which can help you to change the design at runtime. And also you can get a javascript output as well.
