A tribute to Dr. Aiya avargal.

We lost a great and noble soul in the passing away of Dr. Arumugam. I had the good fortune of knowing him and his siblings as well as his father who was my fathers friend. They were very religious and charitable hearts and running a printing press called 'Kugan Press'. Besides printing and distributing religious hymns  to one and all in the neighbour hood, book binding and notebooks were free for poor and needy children. Well, in those days in fifties, there were many who qualified for their generosity.

Even to his last day, Dr. Arumugam made arrangements for school fees for several children in his neighbour hood.

Talking about, booklets of hymns, in almost every household in cantonment area we had Vinayagar Agaval printed by Kugan Press, and it was customary on Vinayaga Chadurthy days for the whole family to sit in front of the mann-Pillayar and read the hymns. For small children like us, it was a painful waiting, since till the whole book was read aloud, and Mangalarthy done, the goodies in front of pillayar were not allowed to be eaten. And there were mounds of them. Reading the last line Agaval Muttritru underlined and then by Kugan Press-was the real starting  of  Vinayaga chadurthy feast for we children.

Those were great days. School, Pillayar Koil, Odukkathur Madam, pillayar Koil in Armstrong Road( this was again run by their family and friends) and great souls like Dr. Arumugam's family were our only outings.

It was no great coincidence, the Dr. was married to yet another illustrious family from Coimbatore. Mrs. Arumugam comes from the great lineage of Ratna Sabapathy whose name still bears down in RS Puram. The late Jayavardhana Velu, former Chairman of LMW company and my mentor had tremendous respect for that family since it is believed some of their forefathers have gained from their generosity.

Dr. was a great man and they were great couple. We in turn were humbled by his humility and humanity. I had the honour of dropping them home from Odukkathur madam on a few occasions when he became feeble. The amount of thanks and good will he used to shower on us for the simple ride which was( sadly, not present tense any more) enroute for me in any case, was embarrassing and used to bring tears in my eyes.

It is natural for every one to die. But we wish for the unnatural to happen at times  and let some people live longer. We wish the Dr. Lived longer.

Dr. K. Gnanamurhy.

In memoriam of Dr.Arumugam Iyah, whom we call lovingly as 'Doctor Uncle'was a very affectionate and special family friend of ours. In the course of our friendship we have seen many exceptional traits in him .First his simplicity and down to earth personality made him approachable to all.
He had a deep sense of compassion. His assertion was that we should help those who we do not know for, they shall not be obliged to favour you back.
Once he distributed geometry boxes to students of a school near Vellore ( it is run by Krupananda Vaariyaar's grandson) There he saw children walking barefoot. Thinking of their plight in that hot land, he made another trip to the school to distribute footwear to them. This, and numerous other donations for the cause of education .
Being an ardent follower of J.Krishnamurti, he would often be meditative and deeply reflective. He was benevolent to all humankind , yet he would ponder aloud why is it that we do not change for the better?
One could see this anbargal in action always.
His sense of humour was unbeatable ! Even his failing health could not dampen his spirit. Once when his dentist told him that his denture was old and needed to be replaced , he quipped " Oh this body needs to be replaced". Another time when Mami complained that his feet swell, he reasoned," so what? Only our head should not get swollen !"
In his good natured way he used to shower his love and affection on us. Every other day he used to call and regale me with lively jokes. He is survived by his virtuous wife and meritorious and excellent sons. May their tribe increase. An important chapter has come to an end. Life must surely go on. Yes , with Doctor Uncle's good wishes and blessings it surely will.

Dear All,

I was one among the gatherings who were fortunate enough to be with Dr.Iya when his remains were offered back to flames.
Even at this point of time, the kind of discipline that the family showed is commendable. Not only that, the kind of respect I got just because
I am from Thiruppugazh Anbargal group is of the highest order that I have ever seen in my life time.

This is how I feel people will teach the way to live life, even after their time is stalled.
