A tribute to Dr. Aiya avargal.
We lost a great and noble soul in the passing away of Dr. Arumugam. I had the good fortune of knowing him and his siblings as well as his father who was my fathers friend. They were very religious and charitable hearts and running a printing press called 'Kugan Press'. Besides printing and distributing religious hymns to one and all in the neighbour hood, book binding and notebooks were free for poor and needy children. Well, in those days in fifties, there were many who qualified for their generosity.
Even to his last day, Dr. Arumugam made arrangements for school fees for several children in his neighbour hood.
Talking about, booklets of hymns, in almost every household in cantonment area we had Vinayagar Agaval printed by Kugan Press, and it was customary on Vinayaga Chadurthy days for the whole family to sit in front of the mann-Pillayar and read the hymns. For small children like us, it was a painful waiting, since till the whole book was read aloud, and Mangalarthy done, the goodies in front of pillayar were not allowed to be eaten. And there were mounds of them. Reading the last line Agaval Muttritru underlined and then by Kugan Press-was the real starting of Vinayaga chadurthy feast for we children.
Those were great days. School, Pillayar Koil, Odukkathur Madam, pillayar Koil in Armstrong Road( this was again run by their family and friends) and great souls like Dr. Arumugam's family were our only outings.
It was no great coincidence, the Dr. was married to yet another illustrious family from Coimbatore. Mrs. Arumugam comes from the great lineage of Ratna Sabapathy whose name still bears down in RS Puram. The late Jayavardhana Velu, former Chairman of LMW company and my mentor had tremendous respect for that family since it is believed some of their forefathers have gained from their generosity.
Dr. was a great man and they were great couple. We in turn were humbled by his humility and humanity. I had the honour of dropping them home from Odukkathur madam on a few occasions when he became feeble. The amount of thanks and good will he used to shower on us for the simple ride which was( sadly, not present tense any more) enroute for me in any case, was embarrassing and used to bring tears in my eyes.
It is natural for every one to die. But we wish for the unnatural to happen at times and let some people live longer. We wish the Dr. Lived longer.
Dr. K. Gnanamurhy.
