Congratulations- the world's largest democracy has given its
verdict. The beauty of the exercise has been the many pleasant
surprises it has thrown up. All along Advani was day dreaming that
the prime minister's post will be offered to him on a platter by
default. By fantasizing so he has under estimated the power of the
common man. Advani must be the most disappointed man in the country
today for his dreams have come crashing to the ground.
Closer home our prediction in Bangalore Central has come true. None
can live in past glory. We are only as good or as bad as our most
recent assignment. The result is the finale of the script that was
written soon after the 2004 elections. We have some valid reasons as
to why we had to oppose the Congress Candidate. In the 2004
Parliamentary elections, cutting across party affliliations and
religious faith, we entrusted all our faith on this very same
candidate. There were thousands of people who toiled day and night
for his victory. We did not do this with any selfish motto, but only
a desire that we have a responsible man to represent us in the
parliament. We risked our limbs, life, and reputation in putting our
weight behind this man.
All of us should have an attitude of gratitude and acknowledge the
contribution of others in our success in our personal, corporate, and
social scenarios. In our rise we must take along the others in the
team and share our success with all. The person who cleans our work
table and the one who sweeps the streets to keep it clean for us- All
play an important role. Post 2004 election victory, Sangliana never
had the courtesy to connect with the common man who voted for him and
in the days that followed the gap between him and the common man only
became wider and wider. This man was so obsessed with his "reputation"
and greed for power that he thought that it was only his and his
popularity that won it for him. The truth soon dawned on the people
that he had only "used" the goodwill of the common man for his
personal accomplishments.
Rahul Gandhi has not won today because he is Rajiv's son or closer
home H. D. Kumaraswamy did not win because he paid money to the
voters. These people did not neglect the common man. They went down
to the grassroots and identified with their suffering. They did not
sit in ivory towers and dream of power. So, it is this connect which
is hard work, toil, and sacrifice that made all the difference.
In the run up to the 2009 Parliamentary elections, Sangliana was so
confident and claimed that people will vote for "his image" and this
was to be his downfall. This forum raised a set of 15 valid questions
before him. Till the end we did not get a official response from him.
Issues cannot be swept under the carpet. A small speck today, a
pebble tomorrow, and a rock the day after. If you sweep this under
the carpet. Very soon you are likely to have a mountain under your
carpet and you will soon trip and fall. This is exactly what has
happened. The real issues were ignored.
All the illgotten wealth of the infamous MLAs from Shivajinagar and
Shantinagar were splurged during the elections and this did not swing
the voters. Sangliana did not ask for the support of the common man.
The entire campaign was a damp squib. He had no achievements to claim
and was talking of a Total quality management plan for Bangalore. If
wishes are horses, beggars can be riders. He again antagonized a
section of people by starting his election campaign from a temple. We
are not against this act by itself, but this was a manipulative
strategy to impress the people. There was no need for it this time.
This is a secular state, dont mix religion and politics.
The Bangalore Central constituency had about 19 lac eligible voters
and it was impossible for the H T Sangliana Campaign committe of 5
sycophants to reach out to them. A member of parliament is not an
individual but an institution. It is not a one-man show but an
organization of the collective interest of the people. Sangliana ran
this institute like a propriety concern, where as it is a cooperative
society. In the first place there was no process in place and the
public relations was pathetic. This left the common man in total
confusion. Overnight in 2005 a HT Sangliana foundation sprung up. God
only knows what was the intention of this foundation and who were the
members. Suddenly along the way Sangliana also claimed to be a social
worker. We are not sure if he knows the implications of being a
social worker in the true sense of the word. He failed to deliver as
an MP when he had all the privileges with him and what can he do now
is anyone's guess. It is not always being in power or a position of
office that people can serve others. It is sincerity and this was
lacking in him. He also became a champion for the christians and
started to weave a non-existant unity among all denominations post
Kandhamal riots. The people who followed his rhetoric picked up the
vibes when he sobered down his attack on the anti-christian forces.
There was a clandestine pact that he stuck with VHP-RSS. Sangliana
again had a game plan with a selfish interest, not the interest of the
community.
The following are the two scenarios for Sangliana. Pack the bags go
home and the second- MP or no MP, still work for the people.
The first option is the most likely scenario (98%). He came, he
enjoyed, and he left. The second option is least likely (2%). Since
he has all the financial security he has the option to reach out to
people. But this involves time, energy, sacrifice, and expenditure.
He will not take this challenge. He is never a serious politician.
He wants to enjoy the fruits of it but does not want to toil for it.
Another man has to sweat and he will not share the fruits with him.
Politics is not a child's play.
So what does the first option leave the common man - high and dry.
Do not be disheartened. The common man is still the king maker.
There is more awareness now and we can still monitor our elected
representatives. We do not have to bend before the representatives
for we are not sycophants. We will demand our rights and make our
voices heard.
At the end of the day, it makes no difference who occupies this office
but it is only the people who can make the difference.
Jai Hind.
