Rock The Sun – A Technological, Cultural and Social Project
A collaboration between Cédric Carles, a Swiss designer and Vialka, a
French music duo. The team will build a mobile solar powered sound
unit that can be operated without using the electric grid. After the
onsite construction of the solar powered unit at Jaaga in Bangalore,
the team will demonstrate its functioning at presentations, lectures,
DJ-sets and concerts by Vialka in Bangalore and Pune.
The 3S Solar Sound System is a modular solar powered amplification
unit that can work in public places, in urban centers as well as in
remote parts of the country. Since its creation in 1999, the 3S has
been used successfully across the world for several applications. The
mobile unit being assembled in India will use Solar Sound Systems
already in existence. After their tour, the team will leave the unit
in India so that it will be available for other interested
organizations. The unit can be used to power equipment at cultural
events, amplification at presentations and lectures and as an
educational tool in workshops/presentations on solar energy.
3S Solar Sound System and Cédric Carles
Designed and created by Cédric Carles in partnership with Atelier2cé
and ITEXADER in 1999, the 3S have been extremely popular and have
brought a wide audience into direct contact with a concrete, tangible
and interactive application of solar energy. This evolving project has
developed from a prototype to a reliable high performance music unit
and led to the creation of other solar units in Switzerland, France,
Haiti, Greece, Italy, Brazil, India and soon in Japan. Founded by
Cédric Carles in 2004 and based in Lausanne, Atelier2cé is a network
and knowledge base answering the needs and requirements of technical
and artistic projects across the world. The members of this think-tank
share a multidisciplinary approach to their work. Atelier2cé creates
objects, spaces and events optimizing the use of materials and
favoring energy efficiency and recycling.

Vialka
Vialka is a new music guitar, percussion and vocal duo which hail from
deepest France, via everywhere and nowhere. This devilishly
high-spirited guitar/drums duo tours hard and fast across the world.
Their music skips joyfully across borders, channeling desert blues,
Chinese folk songs, scatter rock and European gypsy song dynamics in a
whirlwind of energy. Vialka is not just a musical project, but also a
social scientific experiment, attempting to meet, communicate and work
with extraordinary and little known musicians and artists from
everywhere and nowhere – with particular interest in polluted
dictatorships, bleak colonies, and monarchic democracies. The duo has
toured extensively in over fifty countries (100+ concerts per year)
across Europe, Africa, North America and Asia.
