Hi Guys,

I am a newbie who loved cycling as a kid but has been off pedals for around 15 years now. After my visit to Manali-Leh last year, where I saw bunch of bikers and then meeting one of those in Bangalore (Mayank) at a session in Texas Instruments, I decided to give a shot again to my old love.

After reading up online and comparing many brands, I went ahead and bought Revel 0 medium(18") size from RR cycles, Ulsoor. Since yesterday evening, I have ridden it around 35-40km and have really loved the drive and feel.

But my confusion started last night when I was reading bike manual, where I read about the standover height. I went and checked on my bike and found that my crotch touches the frame when I straddle over bike. I am 5ft 6" and had same confusion even before buying about the size (small or medium). I looked up online and learned that correct yardstick is that your leg should completely stretch (and no more) when you pedal. I tried medium size Giant at RR and found with bottom seat position my knee bends very slightly so I might have to pull seat up a bit thus medium looked OK to me. But I am getting concerned by standover height thing as manual said you should have minimum 3-4" clearance when you standover.

Other than this issue, I really loved the bike. I want to know how important is standover height and crotch clearance from your perspective (dont want to smash by organs in a freak incident). Also if I should change my cycle to smaller size, anyone has any experience in replacing cycle one day after purchase.

Looking forward to your advice!!

Thanks,
Puneet

Assuming that it is a case of wrong frame size n going by the mail, i dont think it was a 'push' sale frm RR either, a couple of things u can try, may be it might help -

- sweet talk RR to exchange, i know the ulsoor guy reasonably well, i might be of help if u want to
- if that doesnt help, may be think of shorter stem, but u cant do anything about the stand over hgt.... or see if u quickly sell n buy a new one... i know it looks tuf, but i think it is better to get the right size soon...

Saddle height or leg extension is not really a bike sizing problem. Most bikes these days have seat posts long enough that you can ride any frame size with the seat post pulled all the way out.

Stand over height is important for MTBs - specially if you plan to do a lot of off road riding as there would be situations where you might fall off the saddle onto the top tube.

HI,

Thanks for your comments.
It was kind of a "push" as I was keen on small but he convinced me to medium. Giant does not have small. Although I dont hold him responsible. I quite liked the store and my experience with Nitesh from RR, Ulsoor. Any help you can provide would be great!

Can I call u sometime?

Thanks,
Puneet

Definitely big man. At 5' 10" I'm still seriously considering the
17" (different bike though to be fair) instead of the 19" and pretty
much most people are pushing me in that direction.

He was bullshitting about Giant not coming in a 'small'. It even comes
in an Xtra Small. See here - http://pedalsandwheels.com/product/giant-revel-0#4
This was definitely a push with a good dose of crap thrown in.

Try swapping. Try very hard. Mind you, if he claims there are no
smalls then the odds are that he won't be stocking it and won't get it
for you.

If you can't swap, try selling without losing too much and then head
to Wheelsports and get your size. Venky's rates on the new Giants will
also probably be so good that you may end up losing next to nothing in
the bargain.

Finally, if you can't do anything else, try getting a really small
stem to reduce your reach. But, that still doesn't address your
standover issue.

Tough luck man..

There are 2 points here- a> Bike frame sizing according to persons height..
b> assuming correct frame size, bike fitting is done, wherein rider is helped with adjustment of seat height/stem length/saddle positioning(rare)..
stem/saddle adjustment is generally not very widely done/required,as bikes generally fit people between a range of heights..

personally, from first impressions my take is that probably the bike might be a tad too big for comfort..

There might be a lot of people keen on a 19" frame. You should be able to get a decent price. I know at least one person looking for bikes in that size and price. Please send a separate mail with the details to me. You can go for the smaller frame with a nominal burn in the pocket - totally worth the lesson learnt! :)

Correction in my mail... As per him Giant does not have small in India, they only distribute above Medium in India///

I called him today and he has agreed to swap this with CanonDale Trail 6 in small size but using same tyres I had for Revel 0. Trail 6 is probably 1000 buck cheaper than Revel 0 so not a big loss I guess.

Would you recommend any other bike other than Trail 6. Also is it a fair price for Trail 6.. 23.5k

Here is the pic of one I have..

Thanks,
Puneet

It is a fair price - http://www.trackandtrail.in/Trail-6.asp. Price
listed is 24,500 and most places usually sell at MRP. RRs prices are
usually very good and I'm sure Track n Trail would be more.

Whether you want the bike is a different story. Component-wise it just
doesnt match the Giant. Deore vs. Acera.. But you'll always pay a
premium for Cannondale certainly. Try it out for size with your
newfound info before you pick it up. And let him give you the
difference in cost in accessories.

You can check out KHS Alite 500 and Merida MTA 510 both under 23K. If
you stretch KHS Alite 1000 is a steal at 28K.

I think Giant you get a medium for 5'7 to 5'11. Giant has Revel 1D at
22k but I wud rathre go for revel 0.
