Dear Friends,

Me and my son Manoj (13 years old) are planning to do Bangalore – Vellore (Tamilnadu) ride during Diwali holidays. It will be around 220 Kms.

We have two routes in my mind

Route 1

Bangalore -> Hoskote -> Kolar -> Venkatagirikota -> Peranampattu -> Katpadi -> Vellore

Route 2

Bangalore -> Hoskote -> Kolar -> Mulbagal -> Palamner -> Chittoor-> Katpadi -> Vellore

Need your suggestion in selecting the route and please share your experiences

I would like to avoid Hosur - Krishnagiri route, since road widening and other constructions are in progress through out

Thanks & Regards,

Sanath Kumar S D

Hi Sanath,
I was driving back from chennai yesterday noon via Route 2 mentioned below. The road is roadbikeable.
From Blr-Kolar the tarmac is roadies delight with wide roads, but absolutely 0 tree covers and bit windy, so be prepared.

After that till Katpadi its mostly single lanes :( Few sections before Karnataka border has got huge potholes and vehicles zig zag as if playing a video game to dodge them. So be cautious in these stretches. Also as it is single lane, folks coming from opp direction overtaking other vehicles will directly be on your lane so be very very cautious in these stretches.

The section between Palamner to Chittoor has got some lovely climbs and nice greenery/forest kind of surroundings. You might want to think over how your son like climbs. Also trucks are ultra slow on these climbs and cause huge pile up of traffic behind, so be careful for that too.

There are couple of tree covers in these section which is good thing :) Also lots of vendors siding beside road selling Custard apples.. hardly any tender coconut vendors though. There are couple of towns/villages where you can fuel up.

Ride safe, Send us the ride report,
Rgds,
Nalla.

why don't you take the regular hosur road ... high trafic, but wide and rolling, but ya again no tree cover and also not so adventurous as the the 2 routes mentioned above. Anyways, bol for the ride :)

Hi sanatha kumar,

we have done Bangalore- vellore route back in march-APR-2010 in adrenaline rush to finish Bangalore- Chennai in 24hrs but ended up doing Bangalore Vellore.

i would suggest you to go Bangalore-K'giri-vellore which would be lot easier with good roads than troubling yourself with either routes that you have mentioned as many of the truck fellas have started to use them to avoid toll on Bangalore-K'giri-vellore route, you should be highly cautious to ride on this route as well single and bad roads-oncoming traffic.

having said that now on the Bangalore-K'giri-vellore there is a third lane construction going on so you have no shoulder spared to ride so you will be riding on lane-2,now and then you have to negotiate with the traffic

Best wishes for what ever the route you choose-Ride Safe.

I was thinking of doing the Bangalore-Vellore ride too, sometime in the coming months.

Will look forward to a ride-summary from you.

I do drive often to Vellore though, and Nalla's summary is bang on. With your 13-year-old riding along, something you may want to prepare for would be the heat and the odd long barren stretches (the Palamaner-Chittoor section is always nice though). And watch out for some crazy drivers (as always!) particularly the median-less sections after Kolar.

If you get lucky with the weather, it should be beautiful ride.

Good luck!

In my opinion, route 1 is better and more enjoyable for riding. You will get very little traffic compared to that in Mulbagal-Chittoor-Vellore stretch.

Hi Sanath
I did the Chennai-BLR a few weeks back via Route 2 (...Kolar/Hoskote).
After suggestions from BBCh members, I decided to do Kolar/Hoskote and Enjoyed the ride.

Chennai to Sriperumbuder : Busy traffic. (Had two punctures!)
Sriperumbuder to Wallajahpet :  4-lane highway, Hot (no tree covers), safe as long you are are on the edge of the highway.
Wallajahpet - Chittoor : Two lane, cuts though towns, had a good lucnh and relaxed at a teh expansive outdoor restaurant (Virundu)
Chittoor-Palamner: 2 lane, good scenery, tree cover, climbs(loved this), did this in late afternoon
Palamner-Kolar : Peaceful ride, a very hungry ride as I misjudged dinner plane and dinner ended up being biscuits!
Kolar onwards : 4 lane to Bangalore

Started at 5AM (Chennai) and reached BLR (4AM) with about 60 minute loss due to punctures.
Personally I would try this route anytime.
Warm Regards
Ashok
