Hi - I'm packing up for my year long visit to India (with my bike) and
am wondering
if I should bring a U lock or a cable lock (or both?).
I'll be spending most of my time in Mysore with some visits to
Bangalore.

Here in San Francisco, at least downtown, a U lock is no more secure
than a cable lock.
The thieves roam around with the necessary equipment to break it
regardless.
Also, U locks are clunkier and require a conveniently shaped metal
post to go around.
So in fact I generally use a light cable, because it is all symbolic,
and just to prevent
obvious crimes of opportunity. But the same may very well not apply
there?

Thanks.

I use a Kryptonite cable lock, but try to keep bike in sight, or
somewhere near. I would not leave an expensive bike in a parking lot
for the day etc. My purpose is only for a quick shopping episode etc.

IMO Cable is most appropriate in india simply due to lack of appropriate parking facilities in most places.

The correct answer is as many cable locks as possible. All these locks only delay the process of stealing and our job is to make sure that process becomes as clumsy and slow as possible.

Surprised at the overwhelming votes for the cable locks. I don't think we have U-locks available locally so the OP will not face the problem faces in US cities where thieves just know how to open them.
A good U-lock is pretty solid, so any reason why he shouldn't bring the one he already owns? Aside from the weight of it, that is.

OP claimed he owns both U and Cable and is figuring out which one is appropriate.
