My very close friend in office (his name is Chirag Rathod) has been commuting to office for the last 8 years (out of 14 years in the office). Needless to say, he was the one who formally initiated me into cycling and running sometime in early 2008. And he has quietly turned a lot of people into running and cycling, though not as hobby, but more as practical aspect of life.

He bought this cycle from BOTS in early 2010 and BOTS had to procure it as they didn't have stocks of the model that time. I remember him waiting with excitement for the arrival of the item. He maintains it really well and it was as good as new even after 4 years. The bike is exactly as this one in the pic: http://www.bumsonthesaddle.com/displayBike/trek-7-1fx

On 19th Nov (day before yesterday), he left the bike in office (locked with Decathlon thick cable number lock latched with frame onto the fence railing of the two wheeler parking). He was unwell in the evening and his wife picked him on car. And he was off yesterday. And today morning, he found that his bike was missing.

He had already inquired the security staff. They said that someone came in and said that it was his friends cycle and he had been told to take it!! As easy as that sounds and ours is a building for only Oracle employees and thus there is no confusion about who comes in and who goes out - it can be only Oracle badge. Here the security has let the stranger take the bike just like that! It is frustrating for my friend as well as for me (as I also commute on bike). But for now, the only hope seems to be some kind of internal investigation if the security dept is willing to do. Otherwise, I don't think police can help.

So, if anyone is selling a Trek 7.1 Fx, please do let me know.

Thanks and Regards,

Opendro,

So sad to know this. I know how much he feels it.

If that security guy is not sacked (or pays for bike) I bet shortly someone else will lose the bike there. It is sheer negligence.

I feel you guys need to bring tremendous pressure on security guys to find out who is the culprit or pay for it.

After going through the video feeds, the story is a little different now. The guy came in an Atlas cycle, leaves his cycles and goes away with the Trek. This happened within a span of 3 minutes. Video feed is pretty bad to recognize the face as my friend saw this. Then that guy came back again to take his cycle.

Now, he couldn't have cracked the lock in 3 mins. The fencing is accessible from outside though it is actually kind of inside the gate of another apartment (Prestige St. John's Woods). So, it is likely that the lock was cut from outside and he just came in to take it.

So sad...all this happens when the place is guarded by security. They (security guards)just cannot escape like that, it is easy to notice it.

It is like this, if someone uses Merc their will be very few and it is different not difficult keep an eye. So is bikers there are very few, that too, within minutes he comes in one cycle and after few minutes one more cycle.

There are quite few bikers at Oracle, please take it strongly!!

Do the guys allow a person coming on an Atlas unless he is a regular or they too are involved in this stuff. Also, second time he just walked in to take his Atlas out? That too without the knowledge of the security? It all sounds fishy. (I decided to buy a Firefox for 9K and use it for commute keeping such things in mind. At least it won't pinch so hard even if it is stolen or lost.)

Ashok

Scary indeed. Is there anyone who has got his stolen bike back? I guess, its near impossible.

Now I'm worried about parking my bike at my office, though no one without company id is allowed anywhere near the parking slot.

Sorry to read that Opendro. It does hurt.

The whole incident Sounds so planned !

The security guys should be thoroughly questioned. How can a stranger be allowed just like that who claims to be some one's friend or relative !

And last 2 days 2 bike theft news ! its taking a bad shape now ! (a couple of days ago one from Indiranagar)

So even these locks are useless (something to do with Decathlon locks as such ?? I hope not) ! They do look strong and would take enough time to break them rite !

Are there any particulars to identify the bike ? I mean any personal markers etc. ?

Thanking you
Regards

I believe I read some time ago there was a successful case of a trek bike which was stolen.  Some one identified and reported it to the owner who immediately came, verified and got back the bike!

May be I shouldn't write too much about how security works here in my office. In a nutshell, a person can pass the gate security as visitor. Work places are protected by a door which can be opened only using the badge. Parking places are all accessible to anyone who passed the gate security.

You mean the main gate doesn't note anything about the visitors identity nor do they keep a register for that? If it is a complex with many companies, that could be the case. But for single companies, usually it is not that way.

And finally there will be a board saying park at your risk. :( So, at the end of the day, we will be back to square one, and are left to ourselves to take care of our stuff.

What are you saying, at Kalyani Magnum (J P nagar) you can't even enter the entire campus as visitor without an appointment with Mr. X or Y at security check they call that guy and confirm the appointment then only you can enter the campus (there are more than 15 companies have their offices).

Breaching security barrier in most of the campuses is not at all that tough if someone wants to do it.

Thinking aloud, a folding bike carrying till the desk may become an option for safety reason.

Do you think the lock type would have mattered? Since it was parked over night, the guy would have taken his own sweet time fooling around with the lock and later he flicked it at a non suspecting hour. They cut grills with gas cutters and steal gas cylinders in Bangalore.

Opendro, if your friend checks the CCTV stuff for a longer period(if possible, for the entire two days), he might get some hints..

This is sad n shocking man. How can the building security be so careless?

I suggest you launch a police complaint and tell the building security and office HR with an official mail that you are launching a police complaint for the same. they will then spring into action and both of them can question the security. there is an insider hand involved in this. I am pretty certain.

hope you find the bike..

When I used to commute, I used 3 locks for my bike. I purchased a big Kryptonite U lock that's near impossible to cut. I used to leave that at office. I had two other typical B-twin locks also. I used to the U-lock to the bicycle stand and the b-wtin locks to tie up the wheels with a chain tied to the bicycle stand.

Sounds a little cumbersome, but I used to leave the locks at the office so it wasn't a big hassle. All this was after my Trek got stolen and I got a little extra careful.

I totally sympathize with your friend. It feels terrible.

Ok guys. The cycle is found. The security seemed to have taken seriously and spread the word. I don't want to raise too many doubts now though I'm pretty sure that the guy couldn't have been a total stranger.

Just 10 minutes ago, a guy called the security desk / whatever and told the security that the cycle is tied to a nearby TVS showroom with the same lock and combination. My friend just walked there and collected the bike in the same condition as it was taken. My friend changed the number combination now.

Happy ending overall... but I'm worried now as I also use combination lock!

Oops. Was that a number lock? It takes not much time to find out the key even with brute force approach on a 3 or 4 digit number lock. I have done it when i forgot my lock code of my suitcase.

Good news that they got it back. And may be you can use this opportunity to stress for better security at the premises. Your friend must be relieved now.

The security guys understood that you guys were not going to leave it, so the message reached the right place and the bike came back... :)

Ashok

Happy your friend (Chirag Rathod)got the bike.

Super....

It is time to tighten the security measures, may be Kalyani Magnum and many other such places it is a good example to learn as it is only Oracle.

At Kalyani Magnum, when one enters the security check he need to show I'd proof, phone no, enter I'd no, and with whom is the meeting enter their employee I'd no (that tells a lot about the security).

number combination locks are not good Sir.
A school friend of mine when we were in school used to claim that he can open any such lock in minutes. he actually later demonstrated it to everyone. 5 digit lock. He opened in 7 minutes. brute force ofcourse

so i m sure a pro can do it even faster.

One simple question will solve the issue.

Ask the security guys how that person got to know that the bike was stolen from this campus and how did he call these securities if he himself was not the thief and he didn't get information that people were seriously following it up.

So even if they give a lame excuse saying his number could not be traced or he called from a public booth, how come he got to know that he would be tracked down. If he didn't know that, he just took it for a ride to Mysore and returned it afterwards. Is that the case?

So funny it is... :)

jokes apart..
now since the bike is found the police is not going to even take a complaint and bother investigating.
actually in my opinion this is a big opportunity to get hold of the gang ....

can someone who has a number lock try this?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X3izdvCyVtk

i dont have one at home!!
Ask someone in your house to change the combo and lock it. and use the trick in the videos.

I have seen many cyclists use number locks. my intention is to alert them.

thanks.
