Dear riders,
With the marathon race coming up next month, though of going for a practice ride to Ooty. Anyone willing to join up? For first timers, you can plan your timelines for the race based on this recce.
Here is the plan. (
Ride Route)
Take the friday late night last Volvo (12 am) to Mysore.
Reach Mysore by morning 3-3:30.
Start riding from Mysore at 4 / 5 am. Night ride upto Nanjangudu, 25 kms from mysore, is in an utterly bad state (for road bikes). Kindly carry good front lights for safe ride. Traffic will be very less at this time.
Nanjangudu to Ooty is gr8 road.
Ride options :-
1. 150 kms for easy riders. Ride to Ooty and stay in a hotel or take the night volvo back to bangalore.
2. 300 kms for hard riders. Ride back to Mysore and take a night volvo back to Bangalore.
Riders opting for option 2 need to remember that the Bandipur forest closes for traffic after 9 pm, but since we are on cycles, we need to cross the region by 6pm. Hence the timelines for return riders is as given below. (this is based on my prior ride experiences on this route)
Start Mysore at 5 am.
1 Nanjangudu - 20 km - 6 am - Downhill mostly, terrible roads
2 Gundlupet - 60 km - 7:30 am - Rolling Uphills
3 Bandipur - 75 km - 8:30 am - A taste of hair-pin bend uphills
4 Gudalur - 100 km - 10 am - Mostly down initially and then uphills
5 Ooty - 150 km - 2 pm - Comes the marathon climb.
After reaching Ooty, decide your trip plan. If you are late to Ooty and reached there after 3 pm, forget the return ride to Mysore, stay in a hotel and ride next day or return back same night by a Airavat. Those who reach early or by 2 pm can start back to Mysore immediately following the same route.
Start Ooty at 2 pm.
1. Gudalur - 50 km - 3:30 pm - superb downhills except for a few uphills
2. Bandipur - 75 km - 5:30 pm - Long uphills, killer after the tiring ooty ride - Have loaded lunch/snacks. after crossing bandipur.
3. Nanjangudu - 130 km - 7:30 pm - Rolling downhills. Have a loaded food may be.
4. Mysore - 150 km - 9:00 pm - Bad roads after nanjangudu, terrible traffic. Have a safe ride here. Keep good lights. In case if you do not want to ride, take a volvo from Nanjangudu Bus Terminus. But note that in Mysore the conductors are not familiar with loading cycles in Volvos. So u may need to beg a lot, i mean a lot. Do remember to explain him the bad stretch of the road and Ooty climb which you just completed. He might sympathesize. Luggage charge of 50 is what you pay him up.
Reach Mysore safe and Board a volvo to Bangalore. Be back home for a sound sleep and enjoy a lazy Sunday.
Drop in a mail. Dates are still undecided. Following are the options. Majority vote wins:-
1 - 15 Oct Night
2 - 22 Oct Night
3 - 29 Oct Night - Too late b4 the race though - Should be ideally a lazy ride week.
Do let me know your options at the earliest!
