Cheating has been part of organized sports, for as long as there have been organized sports! There's documented evidence of the first 'match fixing' in the ancient summer games (precursor to the Olympics), as far back as 388 BC!
In 67AD, Emperor Nero was declared the champion in a chariot race he didn't even finish! I guess the whole thing boils down to how far one can go, to win a medal, a title, or a certificate stating you were the best. While there are people who train for hours and hours each day, there are others who simply cheat like Rosie Ruiz. We also have supremely hardworking athletes who still cheated, to go on to win, such as Lance Armstrong.
Things get a whole lot murkier in professional sports, with sponsorships and endorsements at stake, but even amateur events have cheats. I do remember reading on the AIR page about bikers who clung to vehicles to finish brevets on time. Sad, but shocking? I don't think so. There will always be cheats.. Some do it with high tech ways and others not, but there'll always be cheats. The good news? Most of them do get caught! Some get caught years later, but still don't get away scott-free.
