Georg, I was expecting a great response and you have exceeded the
expectations! How do you say "Great Job" in Romansh? Yet again, You
amaze me by your knowledge of the roads.

Guys, unless someone passionately feels about Mekedatu/Chunchi falls,
let us go with Georg's suggestion. I will update BikesZone.com and let
the World know that there is a change in the plans. I am also changing
the subject of this email thread.

Hi yogesh, hi all
I thought about it a few days, and just today chatted with a friend who goes to Sangam tomorrow for his river meditation and swimming exercise, and we both agreed that you must go to that spot nowadays only on a week day.
but besides this , we will do the Sangam ride, just a little later. luckily we can do many more rides before we repeat ourselfs to the exact route. for instance I am looking forward to the Urigam MTB ride down to the river, to a spot where there are so very few sunday tourists.

Ok accepted, we will with all seriousness plan for the sunday aug 30th ride , a round trip so to say around Banerghatta national park in a big circle. no returning on a stretch of road where we were riding out in the morning.

I propose the following:
the  fast roadies group can always ride ahead 30 km and wait for everyone to arrive before taking off again. this is possible on this route because there are lovely chai stalls and food hotels nicely spaced out and they are all good. so we can make it a social ride with the fast racing fever in the front burning away.......!!! are you listening no. 69! lets see what Samim and Dipankar , have to say to this model .I think this way we will all meet and exchange and laugh much more during the day and enjoy real rural laid back life away from the high ways.

further variations:
folks who want to ride only 100 km a day can take monday off  and spend the night at the Anchetti forest rest house for 20 bucks with food in Anchetti town and ride home more relaxed on Monday

in any case I will ask mohan already tomorrow for sunday duty with our Corsa, maybe Vivek 's Kynkyny racing Team  Qualis can join in ?

more later, get in shape , and ride strong with  us on sunday 30th!

For those of you interested in seeing the easy route from Georg, do
the following:
1. Go to in.maps.yahoo.com, Yahoo India Maps
2. Copy/paste the following text into "find location": "from
Banashankari Temple Bangalore to Hunsanahalli, Bangalore Rural,
Karnataka(12.377020,77.593480) to Anchetti to Denkanikota to Anekal to
Bannerghatta to Banashankari Temple Bangalore" (don't paste the double
quotes)

For those of you interested in seeing the hard route,
1. Go to in.maps.yahoo.com, Yahoo India Maps
2. Copy/paste the following:
"from Banashankari Temple Bangalore to Gabbadi Karnataka to
Doddamaralavadi to Hunsanahalli to Anchetti to Denkanikottai to Anekal
to Bannerghatta to Banashankari Temple Bangalore"

Georg, you are the leader. Would you recommend doing the hard route or
the easy route?

THanks!

Georg, It would be really great to catch up in the intermediary spots
like we did at Muthathi over last weekend. I really enjoyed the social
and very informal aspect of that get-together. I am hoping we can
make that happen.

Guys, I AM IN. Pradeep, Namit, Samim, KNMurthy, Suma, etc. Come on
raise your hands and let's have another fabulous ride.

I am attaching two files that show the easy and hard ride circling
around Bannerghatta National Park.

Farhad, we had Pooviah join the last ride. He came all the way from
IISc. No simple solution for the problem you are faced with. Do you
have relatives or friends near JP Nagar 1st Phase who can take care of
your bicycle? You can perhaps leave it at their place ahead of time
and ride to their place in the morning on a motor vehicle. Similarly,
depending on how tired you are, you can drop the cycle off at the same
place and ride home in an Auto. Kamesh did this on our trip to
Muthathi.

Suma/MITR, we will have people driving at all speeds. You will have a
good idea by noon time about people you can buddy up with. I came back
close to 7pm last time. So, I am nowhere close to being fast. I do not
have a great bicycle either. It all comes come down to Mind Over Body.
Once I start, there is no way in hell I am not finishing.

Guys, please do not forget to carry a light with you. Please. If you
do not have lights, please refer to an old post by "Go Green"
Prabhakar Rao. He talks about a couple of places in Bangalore where
you can buy a light for about Rs.400. Please, come with one. There are
no street lights even a short distance outside of the city.

HI yogesh
the lighter route is ok, but i think on the hard route there is a error btween steps 6 to 8 the route is more straight south to hunsanhalli. the red route on the map shows a eastern route which is not asphalted and not directly connected, that would be a few hours more by MTB only. in maralvadi we have to head to dam of the lake more south , across the stream (there is one ashram with school there) and on the other side of the lake further south over the hills towards hunsanhalli. that stretch is all asphalted, very hilly and therefor pretty strenous. th stretch is good for Moultons and MTBs but not every roadie will enjoy it on his filigrane machine!
No. 69, Pradeep and  Vasu! please comment on this and give your opinion!

i guess we leave things open and have a coffee in harohalli and see if somebody wnats to take the hard and hilly road to hunsanhalli, where we shall meet again and go on for lunch in Anchetti, after Anchetti is the terrific Ghat/forest section with the good bathing, swimming and rock diving spots!

God Georg, I have no idea where you are talking about, you know my
sense of direction and geography!!! Was it the non stop upward incline
on the way back from Anchetti, the one where you didn't really see
hills but were climbing like crazy??
If that is the one, it is a very long strenuous climb, but the surface
was OK no?
I think roadies will be fine, just have to put some muscle into it.

GENERAL WARNING:
I know you all are really into this whole long distance thing, but
just be warned that Swiss kilometers are a little longer than the
standard metric ones, so when Georg says 50 km, its actually 70, and
when he says 80, its about 120. So if he is planning a 200 km ride, I
am a little nervous!!!! So No.19, are you sure its a doable loop, for
us lesser mortals I mean?

getting to the starting point at Merida junction:
it looks like we are haveing 3 vehicles accompanying the ride for the day.
  • our corsa,           starting from cooke town
  • viveks Qualis,      starting from mekhri circle area
  • and probably anke's (not Stenzin's) Mahindra Bolero, also from Cooke town
there might be one more vehicle joining in ,
hey by the way:   folks, get yourself a Kynkyny cyle carrier thing after buying the right base crossmembers suiting your car  from JC Road
so people from North Bangalore can get rides  with these 3 vehicles coming down to Merida junction. later during the day, say in the afternoon those who had enough can ride back in bucket seats again. and be in time back to Bangalore check out point - might be IIM on Banerghatta road this time.
so in the last few days before the ride we should be able to organise this properly.

Dear Georg, You have proved (it's been proven before) that technology
in itself is not a good solution. Missing out Anchetti in our ride to
Anchetti would be a faux pas of historical proportions :-)

Guys, I was trying to do this mapping for all our benefit, so we know
where we would be going. But, George has told us about directions,
ascents, and descents. What more information can one ask for, right? I
am going to abandon the mapping effort and let our Computer Map guru,
Pradeep come out with the right route. Techies on this forum, there is
a problem with google maps. Google maps is not as detailed as Yahoo
maps when it comes to showing places like Maralavadi and Hunsahalli.
But Yahoo map's direction/elevation finding feature is just not good
enough! Is there another option for mapping?

For now, I am glad we have our own Georg's survey maps. Georg, thanks
for all that you do!

Regards,
Yogesh.

All on-road. We are not doing off-roads or trails.

Long rides depend on capacity (as in physical fitness) and the
tenacity (as in "never say die" attitude) of the rider.

I use an old (very old) BSA Mach (road bike) in very good running condition.
Done a few rides around Bangalore and ride it regularly around town. Do you

The climbing is fairly tough and long, I wouldn't attempt it on a

Hi Georg

I have an innova. At the moment it would be just me and the driver. So
will have another 2 seats (plus their bikes) available if anyone needs
a lift. I live in Richmond town so plan to drive till the start point
(assuming it's still the junction of kanakpura and outer ring road). I
have Thule 962XT Speedway 3-Bike Trunk Rack. I haven't tested putting
3 bikes on at a time, but i guess if they are all light (trek, merida,
firefox should be ok) bikes it should be fine.

The driver/car will be following us as with other cars and up for
support as and when required.

I am not sure if i am fit for 200+ ride in a day, but have done few 70
odd km rides before. So it would be a good test of endurance!!!! Do we
have a final route map in place?

Folks, this has been a long thread. So, here is the summary for those of you who do not like reading through 81 emails.

When are we riding: This sunday, August 30th 2009
Gathering time: 5:30AM
Departure time: 6AM
(PLEASE, PLEASE, let us start on time)
Expected return time: between 4pm and 7pm depending on capability
Ride type: All Road Endurance Ride - Road bike friendly. Many if not most on MTBs

Experience type: ONCE IN A LIFETIME (for most of us mortals, does not include Georg, Samim, and the like)
Distance: Around 190kms + distance from your home to starting point and back
Where are we going: Big circle around Bannerghatta national park
Route:
  • Harohalli (breakfast at Jayarams canteen next to the old temple)-Maralvadi, Hunsanhalli-Anchetti-ghat section with waterfall and streams-Denkanikotai, anekal-banerghatta-Bangalore.
  • sligthly easier road to Hunsanhalli is continue to kanakapura, across the bridge of Arkavathi to Kodihalli and on to hunsahalli (wider  road, less ups and downs) this also makes close to 200 km, all on small but good enough roads all very scenic.
  • We leave things open and have a coffee in harohalli and see if somebody wnats to take the hard and hilly road to hunsanhalli, where we shall meet again and go on for lunch in Anchetti, after Anchetti is the terrific Ghat/forest section with the good bathing, swimming and rock diving spots!
  • One other variation: folks who want to ride only 100 km a day can take monday off  and spend the night at the Anchetti forest rest house for 20 bucks with food in Anchetti town and ride home more relaxed on Monday
Number of riders: 41 and counting
Number of support cars: expecting 4 at this time. If Anke makes it, we will have one more car, a Mahindra Bolero.
Guidelines for the ride:
  • George proposed the following: the  fast roadies group can always ride ahead 30 km and wait for everyone to arrive before taking off again. this is possible on this route because there are lovely chai stalls and food hotels nicely spaced out and they are all good. so we can make it a social ride with the fast racing fever in the front burning away.......!!! are you listening no. 69! lets see what Samim and Dipankar , have to say to this model .I think this way we will all meet and exchange and laugh much more during the day and enjoy real rural laid back life away from the high ways. Waiting to hear from Samim and Vivek on this proposal. Hope we can make this work.

I will be on my MTB. Slow and steady, we will complete the double century :)

I am not getting my car, however I have a Thule rear hatchback rack that I can lend to someone who is getting a car but does not have a rack.

From lessons learnt from my Nandi Ride yesterday, can i add something:
Doing a double century ride is not going to be simple for many of
us .....so go easy on any training one or 2 days before Sunday so that
you are rested enough, fresh and strong for the Sunday ride. Also get
your bikes in top condition as yourself. :-)

Hi Yogesh , Prakash and all Anchetti riders,
I dont have the ride route on a digital format, i think that can only be done in a concise manner after the ride when some of our GPS fans data gets logged. the google map has a big white blanket over that area.
so we will be doing the following in the next 2 days:
trace and mark the road on the google satellite image, put in all the village names and junctions (where riders alone can make the wrong choice and get on a divious route) and finally print the outline as a line diagram with all those markings on a A4 sheet and hand it out at the start point sunday morning 6 o clock at Merida junction. for those who want to have a head start they can wait for the rest of the group at Harohalli, Jairams canteen (next to the ancient temple where the road leads south out of Harohalli  towards Maralvadi, about 800 yards east from the bus stand on Kanakapura Road).remember, at harohalli we lweave the highway and will move on on small beautiful cycling roads

important admin prep.:
lets start a separate thread exclusively to confirm participation of all the riders really coming; this will help us with the headcount on sunday morning and we know that we can leave merida junction when all registered people have shown up. otherwise we have to wait and cant be sure if every body has turned up.

about the ride:
its in no way harder than the Bhimeshwari ride! the difference is that there is less high way and much more rural roads, so less and less fast traffic.
lunch at half point in Anchetti, thereafter a short even out warm up followed by a burst of steep ghat section , at the top of which i propose to scamper just 100 yards through the bushes down to the stream and swim and bath for half an hour. form there it will be less than one hour slight uphill with sufficient recuperation flats to Denkanikotai  where we reach the plateau height again.  immediately after the forest check point on entering Denkanikotai is Shankars cafe on the left with friendly staff used to bikers and dishing up solid food for us! Denkanikotai to Anekal about 60 to 75 min for tired legs, another one hour to Anekal from where the homing effect kicks in and it takes just another hour to Banerghatta road Meenakshi temple.
all very do-able for all of us, support cars are their for lifts up the ghat section if required and for inside info about  Denkanikotai and last possible rejuvenation wells and the route ahead towards our garden city we better ask Prakash!
Pradeep was on our january Anchetti ride, we made it in 2 days then , but clockwise, now we will be doing it anti clockwise, so his GPS log can be read backwards i guess!
vivek was there too but i told him it will be a all new routing and he takes it as that only I think!

looking forward to see you all,
georg

Am re-considering riding this Sunday UNLESS we get more confirmed
company to 'stay together n slow'...else we may get stranded...and
since this is a very long ride for people like us...it may be unsafe
unless we get a commitment from atleast 2-3 more 'very slow' riders...
(meanwhile am still trying to convince my friend to drive my car &
cycle rack as backup...but looks doubtful...)

I've done 100Kms recently and dont expect to complete the entire
190Kms...plan was to join the group for the fun of it and return by
bus when exhausted/delayed.

Anyone else joining the three of us...and staying with us
throughout???

Hello MITR, I had a conversation with Prabhakar "Go Green" Rao. There are a bunch of people coming from the GO GREEN team. They have the same concerns as you do. I am suggesting that you folks and take a call at the 50KM mark. You can probably head back or ride in a support car (contingent on space) depending on how you feel.

Hello Georg,

Do you have a map of Karnataka/Tamilnadu on which you can draw the line diagram? You seem to be the person with the most knowledge. If you can do it, I can get it Xeroxed for all the riders.

I will start the thread for riders confirmation (admin prep).

More soon,
Yogesh.

Guys, anyone coming from around Hebbal/RT Nagar and can offer me (and
bike) a lift to the starting point?

Thanks,
Nitin.

Hi MITR,

i think we'll be fine....there are quite a few support cars... plus
everyone is kind of aware that we are slow and will look out for us...
RIGHT.. EVERYONE?
If all else fails we'll tie Prashanth to one of our cycles... He cant
do much to save us but when people see what we are doing to him they
are bound to stay away from us :) ... LOL...
Just come, i think we'll survive it... :)

Nitin, Sudhir, i was thinking of cycling from Rajaji Nagar on Saturday
night itself and sleeping at one of our fellow cyclist's place, at
somebody's who lives around kanapura, close to where we are going to
start from. I think you should also do that. Save those 15-20 Km of
riding to enjoy the trip to the max. That would ensure that we are
fresh for the ride and on time too. Plus we don't get to sleep an
extra hour. :-)

Fellow riders, anybody willing to lend a couch for the night? Manjula,
Anjuu, Anita, Shalini, Others, do you guys live close to our starting
point? If yes, can i pl invite myself to your place for saturday
night? :-)

Thanks in advance.
Cheers,
neera

I am very much familier on return route from Denkani kotta to
Bangalore. My first cycle trip was bangalore to our village(I
purposfully took slightly different route Bangalore-->Chanda pura--

gatta--->Bangalore is very good and very less traffic and short too.

on the way back in the middle of Denkani kotta, Thali route there are
two cycle repair shops are there(at kakkadasam 8km from Denkani
kotta).
at Thali also there is a cycle shop is there.
at Denkani kotta and Anekal I have no Idea where cycle repair shops
are located.

on the way back if any help requires I am ready for that my home is
just 4 1/2 km diversion from Denkani kotta and Thali route.

@neera
I think you can use sopport cars till the starting point in case if
you could not find other way. I am riding from IISc at ~4am.
vivek is riding with is car from north bangalore.

Hundred posts and you guys haven't even left yet?

Google just isn't built for traffic like this. Imagine some poor guy
scrolling away on his blackberry trying to get to the end of this. Now
imagine him paying international roaming for that..
