Hi folks,

I have slowly dropped my plans to get a good MTB and am currently planning to get a good hybrid in the next two days...

The bike I had in mind was Bianchi Cameleonte Uno which, unfortunately, is no longer available as told by the person in RR Cycles. Could you let me know if it is available elsewhere?

Then when I went to see the Bianchi, I saw a Cannondale, beautiful and sexy. He said its called "Bad Boy". I liked the bike, but it was 15% costlier than the Bianchi. If I have to look for another decent hybrid, I have to step down to Sporterra Sport or Trek 7.1. Can all the masters here let me know if the "Bad Boy" is worth a shot? If I do more bargaining, I might get the bike for about 36k, along with a couple of accessories thrown in...

Please give me ur suggestions on other bikes worth looking at as well. And I desperately need to buy the bike by the coming Sunday...

Thanks,
Shabs

Buy a hybrid only if you're sure you'll do nothing but commute on that.
Buy a Cannondale Trail 5/6 and get slicks fitted (for commute). If you want to do off-roading you can always use it by putting back the MTB tires.
I think most people on this forum would suggest you to do this.

I bought a Schwinn Searcher sport and can do nothing but commute on that.
Not good for off-roading, cant compete with roadies either :(

Or buy a roadbike and put wider tires on it. Sort of cyclocross bike. You can shift to 700x23 and become a roadie if needed.

Hi Guys,

Thanks for responding so fast... I am not sure how often I'ld do trails and other off road stuffs.... I am currently riding a 4300 and I was amazed by how much increased perf I get by using a hybrid... Mostly my ride includes office commute and long highway rides on weekends... 50-100km...

Do advise...

I think we are off the mark.

The question is: "Can all the masters here let me know if the "Bad Boy" is worth a shot? "

And not "Can all the masters here let me know if I should buy an MTB or a Road bike or a Hybrid? "

I think the best thing to do is ask the LBS if they can tell you name/contact of customers who have recently purchased that bike. Then contact those people to know their take on the bike and how it feels. May be even meet them and if any of them allow a test ride then take a spin on the bike

By emailing the group your confoojan will only grow and multiply.

Also, if the LBS has not been able to clear your confusion on which bike to buy for a given need and a given budget then the LBS needs to re-think how it interacts with a potenial customer.

+1 for arvind
eventually everyone shifts to a road bike
since you already know the difference of performance between a MTB and a Hybrid
Instead go for a roadie, you already have an MTB incase if ever you feel like to do so off road rides

Vasu, Good points. That is the best way to proceed if he's decided on the Bad Boy. I sensed some uncertainty from this message

"I am not sure how often I'ld do trails and other off road stuffs.... I am currently riding a 4300 and I was amazed by how much increased perf I get by using a hybrid... Mostly my ride includes office commute and long highway rides on weekends... 50-100km...

and hence my advice is to seriously consider a road bike. If the increased efficiency on the road is what you're after, especially for those kind of long distances then don't get confused - just get a road bike.

Thanks again guys... I have numerous doubts cleared...

But still there is one thing that stands between me an a road bike... It is the doubt that whether a roadie will do ok on non-tarred roads which we find in many places in Bangalore... Especially, in my place there is no such thing called "Road"... (LB Shastri Nagar)... Is it ok to ride a roadie on such surfaces? I was told by many that a hybrid should do well there, but they are unsure about a roadie...

Ride a road bike with wider tires. I have a bike with 32c tires and it does fine on bad surfaces. Doing a long ride on such a surface may not be fun, but it can certainly handle rough surfaces if I encounter them.

another point to notice:
using a hybrid you can do some stuff like pushing it on the footpath, a jerk and front wheel jumps small ditches.. on a roadie, i felt a little less comfortable, and jerks are more prominent.. i don't know, in traffic, and jams, i rather preffer a hybrid than a roadie where i need to slide between jump around, sometimes do a little offroad..

How about going for a light weight MTB and using narrow tires?
