Folks,

I want to put up my Trek Marlin Gary Fisher 29er for sale. Details as under -

Model - 2010
Size - 48 inch (Should be suitable for those above 5'11" or 6")
Reason for sale - Realise that this is not the best fit for me. I am 5'10".  While i dont find this bike uncomfortable to ride, i am not sure if this is the right size, considering what i have been reading.  Also i have over the last few weeks actually been doing some level of cycling and have developed a tail bone pain, which is adding to my psychology that this might be due to the wrong sizing.
Accessories - a Trek cyclocomputer
Price expected - 26 K. (listed price on Trek is USD 680 and on BOTS is Rs 35k)
Color - Grey and black combination
Condition - the overall condition of the bike is fine. Its hardly used - not more than 500 kms.  I had a fall from the bike once at a very very slow speed due to which it has some minor scratches noticeable for the keen eye.  the reflectors on the pedal have come off but can be easily replaced.

Plan - i plan to pick up another Marlin 29er of a lower frame size at a much higher price (thanks to customs duties :( )

I should have the invoice and the manual etc for those who are interested.

Cheers

where had you picked it up from?  (basically, what sort of 'professional' help had to received in the size selection?)

i'm around 6ft, and i feel by 19.5" Trek 4300D is a bit small for me.  after i added one of those sidebars to the handle last year and pushed the seat back an inch or so (after 1 year of use), it enabled me to lean forward a bit more, and that definately made things more comfortable; but i still feel it's a tad small for me.

before switching to a new bike, you might want to spend some time making sure this really is an incorrect fit.

aside -- what had made you go in for a 29er?  had i been more bike savvy when i was starting off ~2yrs back, i too would have gone for a 29er, now i think.

Imho a bit smaller size mtb is fine but not a larger frame.  Unless one has much longer legs, 5'10'' would be perfect on 18inch trek.

Thanks all for the responses.  I have always been unsure of this sizing issue.  Personally i have been fine riding the bike and have never felt the discomfort etc. But off late, since my tailbone pain has started, i began to wonder if it has got to do with the sizing.

I guess it makes sense to hold on for a while and figure out rather than just jumping off to sell.

I picked this up from Jayanth cycles in Mantri Mall.  It was an absolute impulsive buy. Had no clue of the cycles and the complexity back then. It was - i saw, i like and i picked up.  He told me that 29 inchers are not really common but he had it ready etc and is a good buy and i bit the bullet.  In hindsight, i may have picked the same bike with a lot more research (love the 29er).  I must say that my experience of him is that he is extremely unprofessional. Consider these -

a) he also sold me a trek incite cyclocomputer - which actually doesnt fit my handle bar (sizing issue again). his person opened the pack, and while installing realised the issue. he did some packing with a rubber and fitted it..it came off soon after and i keep doing the same thing over and over again.

b) he sold me a side stand after waiting for 2 weeks (for which i had paid upfront at the time of purchase of the cycle) stating that 29er stands are yet to come.  I had to send the cycle with my driver to get the fittin done. it ultimately transpires that the stand is a wrong fit and the cycle barely manages to hold on the stand.  a slight nudge and it can fall off.

So all in all..for the general public like me it can be a messy affair after paying so much money - although the vendor is "Trek authorised" etc.

Cheers
Vinay

5 10 is a strange height for selecting frame size. I know people at 5.10 who are perfectly happy with 19" frame size and they outnumber the ones at 5.10 riding a 17/18" bike. Unless you're upgrading, I urge you to try out different stem lengths and saddle adjustments before you sell this bike and wonder why. My $0.02.
