A reason to wear helmets:

I'm developing a portable EEG device which can fit into the helmet. You can actually control your bike lights by just thinking about them :)

Lol... :)

Yeah, that's one convincing reason... Currently I control my bike including my lights by thinking about them and then my brain sends those signals to the appropriate organs... Now without even moving the hand means, wow! Why are we even into cycling?

Thanks and regards,
Ashok

Forget safety. I bet many cyclists in Bangalore wear helmet just to differentiate themselves from those who don't have any other personal transport than a cycle.

Every now and then people have posted pictures in this list of their injured helmets.  I have seen a few for real.  Need no further research to prove that an injured helmet is better than an injured head or worse a dead body.

I am a living example of not dying because I did NOT wear a helmet! That was on a motor bike, when I was run over by a shipping container lorry.
I slipped through and missed the differential (Globe) as i was wearing no helmet!
Else it would have seperated by head from my neck!

But then last year during a TT race, one of my team mate hit a dog before the Volvo factory, he came down on the back of his head, lucky the BAR races mandates helmets and the helmet cracked and saved his head! He was tipsy for a few minutes though!

"It depends on not where, or why but HOW the hell you fall!"

My helmet has taken at least 5 crashes out of which two were severe enough to leave depressions and crack but they were all during races and it was on loose gravel or deep trench during dirt race. Surprisingly, I managed to dive side ways on elbow and shoulder during downhill crashes. That must have to do with what I expect and may be avoiding head crash sub consciously.

I don't wear helmet during my daily rides though. It is like how most people don't have air bag in their cars. They drive with the knowledge that their car is an unsafe one and thus take the necessary correction such as keeping low speed limit, etc.

Just looking at the last statement I need to rubbish your entire argument.. In my view, every motorbike rider in Bangalore is sincerely attempting to commit a suicide once every 5 minutes and a Car guy commits an attempted suicide once every 10 minutes (& getting close to killing a motor bike rider (Who is hell bent on meeting his once every 5 minutes stat) 5 times in a minute) .... It's after seeing these guys that I have developed firm belief that (a) God does exist for sure (b) The power of the prayers of their wives and family)...

You rubbished my argument as you had a different frame of mind. I was not really talking about driving in city for cars. Cars and two wheelers in city drive at an average jogging pace, just about 11 kmph. I was talking about highways where roads are good enough for 150 kmph but people control themselves to 80 for instance.

And you don't see motorbikes cruising beyond 80 on highways. It is again plain unsafe. I haven't seen them at least (leave a few exceptions).

Every car should have airbags.

I know at least 1 instance where a friends wife would have survived with one, and 2 where kids would likely have survived with airbags. They should be made mandatory like seatbelts.

And yes, helmets work. Shalini was in a hit and run. Helmet smashed, bad concussion, but no long term head injury. I think she was saved by the helmet.

Just few days back a small branch from the tree fell on my head directly. I was wearing a cycling helmet while I was on a motor bike. And nothing happened to me. If there was no helmet then I would have got bruises on my head.

Always wear a helmet.. Plsss..

Using a cycling helmet on a motor vehicle is the stupidest thing you can do, I would say, my dear friend... :)

Did you treat my advise as "ignorance is bliss"? Despite of saying you so many times you still continue to wear cycling helmet when riding your Dio. Just saying safety is important will not save your head from injuries. I hope you understand that cycling helmet is designed to take only certain impact and the impacts on a motorbike is much heavier and will cause more injuries. Now please do not say you ride slower, wont hurt yourself etc.

Your Head and you need to take care!!

Only Lord Ganesha got a replacement head mate.. not everyone will get one!! ( Line picked from BTP Road safety awareness campaign)

Cheers

Shall we take a quick survey of the safety measures people take on the road?

 1. Do your kids or spouse wear helmet when they sit behind you on motorcycle?

 2. As Pradeep pointed out, if bicycle helmet is not safe for riding a motorcycle in city limits, then bicycle helmet is obviously not safe for riding cycles in city. So, do you wear motorcycle helments with ISI mark while riding bicycles? BTW, Pradeep, how do you cope with cops?

 3. Do you allow your kid to sit in the front seat of car? Note: my kid never ever goes there.

 4. Do you have child seat in your car - rear facing seat for infants and booster seat for bigger child? Note: I always had and still have. I know how I drive.

 5. Do you have ABS in your motorbikes and cars. Note: it is mandatory in European countries. Even Bajaj owned KTM has in their most basic bikes. Honda has it in their European variants of the same models they sell in India.

 6. Do you have ABS and airbags in you car?

 7. Lastly, do you wear helmet while walking, specially while crossing Indian roads? If not, all other safety measures that you are talking are bullshit. Note: I will still wear whenever I want to :-)

Why is it that if you dont have one safety feature the others are bullshit?

You think they are really bothered? Otherwise will you see 100s of motor bikers with no helmet at all?

Another important thing that we are missing out is "Eye Protection" especially when you dont wear helmet with Visors or people who dont use visors!
Its important for cyclist in either case ...whether they wear or dont wear helmets!

Insects, Diesel soot, Pan parag/manikchand thooks, small pebbles and concrete and sand lorries over bumps, BBMP waste disposal contract trucks and tractors,
Cigarette ash from overtaking cars, SUVs and also two wheelers....the heros who like to smoke..anytime and every where!

wearing a good crash resistant polycarbonate eyewear which completely covers and shields the eyes is important.

When you wear dark glasses ...check they have UV coating and certified, as local makes are fakes and the theory is when the lens are dark, your pupils dialate and let in a lot of UV and can cause damage to your eyes.
