Hi Guys,

Planning a 10 day cycle ride.
Mostly ship the bike to Cochin and then ride to Iddukki and then do a
Munnar, Udumalpettai to Pollachi reach coimbatore and then Catch bus
or the train and hit back to Bangalore.

Need some help.

This is my first long ride, so have no idea what all should i be
carrying.
What are the things that I must have with me.
What are the spares that are required.
The average distance I am planning to do is about 140-170km.
Any other pointers.

I own a Trek 4300D, kindly do advice.
Thanks
Jishnu

Ten days is plenty of time to do this. Do compute the total distance
so that you have a good idea of distances. You can use google maps for
this.

What should you carry? Try to visualize your daily routine. What you
intend to do should dictate what you carry.

A few hints :
- a daily kit
- two change of clothes
- it is very very very hot in kerala. So sunscreen and a cap will be
useful. And sunglasses too.
- carry 2 or 3 water bottles
- puncture kit , spare tubes, brake pads
- ORS, glucose, a pack of dates
- headlight, tail light - just in case
- check yout cycle thoroughly before the trip.

Try to start the day early to beat the heat.

Have fun

watch out for private buses, they are known to cause a lot of accidents.

Hi Shree & Justin

Thanks for the help guys, yep..aware of the deadly buses, have been biking (Bullet) there for some time now so aware of the danger.

Cycling there is a first..still planning the route...,
I know the Ranni, Idduki, Munnar, UDumalpettai routes are scenic and just brilliant.

I was also thinking about tenting rather than stay in a hotel.....
Has anyone you done this before....please do advice on the same.

regards
jc

Interesting you should ask about tenting :-) Me and a friend just
finished an eight day ride : coimbatore - palani - kodaikanal -
poombarai - klavarai - kadavari - kottakambur - top station - munnar -
kaladi - athirapally falls - valaparai - pollachi - coimbatore. We
stayed in lodges for 4 nights and 3 days in schools & villages - ie in
tents and sleeping bags. We also pushed our cycle for 6 hours over two
mountains from klavarai to kottakambur. You can do parts of this route
too - we really liked this route!

The thing with tenting is : you need to be careful to avoid staying in
"forests". Finding out what is forest and what is not is not easy.
Schools make for good stopping places. Remember to ask for permissions
of people before you camp. Dont leave plastics etc (you may know this,
but I am just writing this for general info). If you need to pitch a
tent, you need to stop before sunset. We had a small stove with which
we cooked as well!

Good luck...

2 spare tubes.. puncture repair kit..
frame pump.. helmet..
TAil light.. MOST Important.. this alone is known to save bikers from
the sweeping a**h*** motorbikers on hills or ground..
