Hi All,

Hope all you folks are doing great !

Earlier I was working at Divyashree Chambers shantinagar in Cisco office. At that time it was only 20KMs to and fro office. So I use to commute to office in my Hercules ACT 110.
Now we moved to Cisco Campus near Marathalli and it is around 42Kms to and fro from my home.

So I want to know is it safe to commute this far on bike to go to office and come back home atleast 3 days a week.Pls let me know you opinions/thoughts.I will also need to carry my backpack with laptop/lunch box.
Can I adventure to commute to office atleast 2 days in a week to start with on my cycle ?

thnx...Ram

Hi Ram,
Good that you thought of asking the list here too.
As i suggested at office that day, you must try one way first. It will act like POC (Proof Of Concept) :)
On the way back you can always take the office cab.
I suggest you get a pannier to secure your laptop back, biking this long with a heavy backpack will be uncomfortable and perhaps not good for the back too.
Its getting hot nowadays pretty soon, so you may have to plan for it too.
Rgds,
Nalla.

POC yup. I did my POC on a Saturday. So yeah .. POC on a holiday is a
good thing to do and experiment with the routes a bit. :)

Ramprasad, If you can do 20, you can do 42. Here are some things to consider:

1. Leave your home early around 6AM. Try to finish the ride in around 1 hour (or 1hr15min)
2. Leave your office early around 4pm. Try to finish the ride in around 1 hour (or 1hr15min)

Set the expectation that you cannot attend meetings after 4pm unless there is a really good reason. I have sat through meetings where I am not needed that have delayed my return-commute unnecessarily. You got to watch that time. Try not to leave after 4:45pm. It will make for a totally miserable commute. I commute about 16 kms each way. I sometimes take a slightly round about route to finish around 38kms in a day. It's all in the time.

Personally, my biggest challenge is my evening calls. I have them everyday. It sometimes goes until 1AM. Makes it very difficult to wake up early next day.

Hi Ram,

I am doing RTNagar to Marathahalli (Salarpuria touchstone which is
right in front of Cisco) which is a total distance of 43 KM (to and
fro) daily for the past three weeks. I felt a little tired the first
week. But now it has become normal. I start at around 7:15 and reach
by 8:25. on my way back, I start at 5:00pm sharp and reach home around
6:05 or 6:10.

I did not carry my laptop the first two weeks. Last week I started
carrying my laptop in a backpack. The weight is not creating a problem
but the back sweats a lot.

Regards
Raghu

I used to commute 60 km every day, but it was more training than
commuting as all my stuff would go in the office car so I could just
belt it all the way on the highway.
Every friday is our "green day" my entire office rides to work, so
that + or - 60 km for everyone, I then have to carry my laptop on my
back, and really don't like it!
Panniers sounds like a nice idea!
Georg only commutes by bike, to all his meetings and site visits etc,
I'm guessing he does a lot of Kms every day.
Point is to be comfortable and disiplined, then it works

This discussion comes at the right time. I am joining work from monday
and plan to commute abt 32 kms up and down. Earlier I used to cycle
16km to and fro my old office. I can really use some tips on this.
Though weight of the bag is not a problem I have have severe sweat
problems.
I suspect changing rooms are available but I am unsure as to how I
can carry my good clothes without soiling or creasing them. Any
ideas?? Any links, previous discussion I can follow?

Hey man ,
this is great, dont worry, you will be able to do irt regularly soon , it will ultimately become second nature to you.
the back pack is convenient, but the sweat problem is there, so a pannier or something is best, for weekend joy rides you can always take it off.
most important things have been said, i want to stress the importance of the route finding. this is always the key to my rides for work, and i am always able to find good back roads for long stretches.
tell me your home address with landmark and your office and i will see if i can contributre something, but you would have explored already. never stop exploring, sometimes its only a hundred yared off road and you can close a gap from back road to backroad and open up routes you never thought off, such is bangalore. make geographical towm exploration a hobby and you will have fun because ultimately you beat the traffic!

cheers georg

@Ramesh,
The tip to cover long distances is to start with shorter ones. Don't
get carried away by postings of 100 and 200km etc.,
Feel your body and understand it's limitations. Take the stride
incrementally , that should work.
Ride with fellow bikers to office or do weekend rides, which have
proved to be the mobile schools for learning the best biking tips for
me..

Happy riding..
cheers,
Badri

@georg

I love exploring back roads and have discovered most of them around my
area. still new to the shanthinagar, domlur area.
I live around the basavanagudi area and want to cycle towards Old
airport road.
I normally take the sajjan rao circle> uma talkies>shanthi
nagaar>richmond circle>garuda>domlur> airport road route.
any short cuts??

Old Airport Road is usually murder. Depending on where you are going,
you can try the wind tunnel road, nice ride apart from a few rough
patches. It's my commute from Kodihalli to Kodibesanhalli/ORR.

I agree with George on exploring routes... I ride from BSK III
Stage to Bommanhalli and over the last 4 months have figured out a
route with low traffic, lots of tree-lined roads and just one
signal... Its a joy to ride to office now.

I've mapped the route and uploaded it. Here's is the link:

http://bangalore-bikers.googlegroups.com/web/route.png?gsc=ibaibgsAAABxAtJfOXQNKgjkYzM8jLgC

The route is longer as compared to taking the ring roads, but its much
less crowded and just one signal and 4-5 major junctions.
Let me know if you need any additional details.

Cheers,
Vikram
